problems with the trans am

i fixed my radiator problem and then my fuel pump went so i changed that today, it started right up after i changed it and drove fine until about 5 miles later im coming to a stop light and it just dies on me. i push it into a parkinglot and fiddle with some stuff but could find nothing wrong with it. finally after trying many times to start it, the car finally starts(i had to give it gas for it to start and i had to keep it around 3k before it smoothed out) i drove it home and park it, go outside like 5 minutes later and still the same thing, it will not start unless i give it a good amount of gas. the car runs fine but when i shut it of it does not like to start again unless i give it gas.

any ideas guys?

Any codes?

Lt1_8U 02-14-2009 04:21 PM

when i went to inspection it said it was throwing, random misfire, lean bank one and lean bank 2

Random misfire is either CPS or opti I think. Could also be 02 sensors from the lean codes.

IAC motor. Pull it apart and see if it's working and/or gummed up.

Sounds like a vacuum leak or serious fuel issues at idle. Try what he suggested and pull the TB off and try cleaning up everything. The TB gets really dirty over time and a good clean up never hurts.

what is the IAC motor and what does it do?

its really a weird problem, i just drove it about 60 miles without any problems. i came in and went back out after 5 min and it wont start up but for the whole 60 miles it ran great.

Idle Air Control. It is on the throttle body and meters how much air can get into the motor when you aren't hitting the gas.
