3.73's or 4.10's

hey, im going to be getting gears today but i dont know what ones to get im building my car fort street/strip and i dont know what gears to get 3.73 or 4.10 and also i wanted to know where i can get a speedo gear so my speedo will be right with the new gears. let me know what your input is thanks.

NJ346 02-22-2009 12:22 PM

neither. Go with 3.90s. A jump from 3.42's to 3.73s just isn't worth it, and 4.10s are great, but if you do a lot of hwy travelling your mpg will hurt. 3.90s give you a nice jump in acceleration while still retaining some kind of good hwy mpg.

i have 4:10s in my car and with the manual 6 i get 21mpg highway and at about 80mph im at about 2100rpms so its not crazy loud with exhaust. my vote is for the 4:10's

lilredjeep91 02-22-2009 12:49 PM

well the reason im looking at 3.73s or 4.10s is because im getting a deal on the gears either ones for $90 ( yes there new )

91DropTop 02-22-2009 01:17 PM

with a m6 youll be fine with 4.10's if you were auto i would stay with 3.73's

sweetbmxrider 02-22-2009 01:21 PM

you could recalibrate your computer with a little hand held tuner. tranny shops could have the speedo gear. i would do 4.10's out of the two.

:werd:

But I believe with the LT1's powerband, 3.90's would be a better choice. But, since your getting a deal, go with the 4.10's.

lilredjeep91 02-22-2009 01:57 PM

okay, i think im going to go with the 4.10 gears, and how do you change the speedo with the hand held tuner ? and how much is it to do ?

sweetbmxrider 02-22-2009 02:06 PM

the hypertech is answering yes and no questions and entering gear size and rear tire diameter. double check off of a buddies car or gps though.

lilredjeep91 02-22-2009 02:24 PM

alright cool, how much is the hypertech tuner ?

dont need a new gear, need to reprogram the PCM to calulate the pulses

lilredjeep91 02-22-2009 05:49 PM

you can do that or you can change the speedo gear to make up for the gears

sweetbmxrider 02-22-2009 06:44 PM

eh i've never had luck with speedo gears. i would inquire at a local trans shop though. they are cheap and you might find someone with more experience.

LTb1ow 02-22-2009 06:47 PM

I thought the speedo change was only for 93s?

And look on ebay, a lot of people dump the hypercraps on there.

you think correctly, you cant "change a gear" on 94+ cars, they need to be tuned

sweetbmxrider 02-22-2009 06:57 PM

really? ah my bad. thinkin about it mine is electronic and not mechanical. ebay! or a mail order tune?

LTb1ow 02-22-2009 06:58 PM

Yea, you could prob benefit from a "real" tune vs. the hypertech thing.

im gunna be the guy who says 3.73...everytime i look on my wall i say no more 4.10...i have my litterally bald ring gear and my sheared in half pinion mounted on my wall with a plaque that says this is why i dont race corvettes...but anyway the 4.10 in a 10 bolt is too fragile...if you plan on putting some power to the ground later on get the 3.73 for now and save up for a 12 bolt

98tadriver 03-13-2009 09:58 AM

get 4.56s for a 10bolt. and use a gps for your speedometer
