Panhard bar
Does anybody do anything to strengthen the brace that goes to the panhard bar bracket? It looks like an upper panhard bar. Just wondering if I should box it in or leave it alone?
Thanks John |
i wondered the same thing, no one seems to make anything aftermarket to replace it
|
granatelli motorsports does, and UMI's phb relocation kit replaces it as well. i guess the general consensus is just that it does not need a ton more strength/support though. i think i read something like that from a UMI or BMR rep on tech

I wouldn't touch it unless you were planing on some serious abuse in the twisties, and even then I don't know if it would make a difference.

dont bother. if it hasnt been made for an f-body by now, you dont need it. that piece has been around since 1982. if it was so weak, someone would have offered a new piece by now.

UMI's description
"This panhard bar relocation kit is designed to replace the upper panhard rod support while relocating the lower panhard bar. By doing so, this offers enough room to run up to a 3” true dual exhaust system over the passenger side axle. Supplied with this kit is a new heavy duty upper panhard bar support, CNC machined mounting brackets and all needed grade 10.9 hardware. Relocation kit will work with the factory panhard bar and all aftermarket panhard bars." Available in red or black - $199 - free shipping with pick up or install here.. Think its only really needed if you run a largee exhuast outback.

The relocation of the panhard bar can also help suspension geometry. The panhard bar should be as close to paralell to the ground as possible at ride height. If there is a misalignment this may help with correcting it in some cases.

not that i like him personally, but if anyone would know of a benefit of a new PHB support, it would be strano. got to ls1tech or frrax and see him there....hes a national champion (and very arrogant about it) and he runs a stock PHB bracket. so does nearly everyone in AI and CMC, unless they went with dual exhaust and needed the clearance.
|
Not to burst your bubble but that upper PHB bends quite easily in most cases. I have personally seen at least two bent ones and have read about many other that have bent. In most cases the factory part can be upgraded

Thanks everyone.
I am going with the UMI relo kit. |
waste of money if youre not running dual exhaust
|
shiny new parts are never a waste of money:lol:
I have one, though im running a 4" single exhaust, the extra room is nice. Something to think about though. Is you car lowered? if it is you may have an issue with the panhard bar hitting the upper car about in the center of the car. I had that problem and had to use a relocation bracket for the axle side mount too. |
