What type of racing series would you design?
I was on Nascar.com checking the linup today and for some reason the constant complaining about tires made me wonder how things would run if they were looser with their rules, and what else I'd change... which would be a lot.
So as the title states. Everybody always seems to have complaints about a particular racing series and how badly it sucks. I'd take NASCAR, make them run the factory chassis and certain engine components, and make them take both left and right turns more than twice a season. No restrictions on tires, and allow the drivers to be as aggressive as they want. And every car would be outfitted with a single 10 second shot of nitrous. |
So I have to pick an existing race type?
I would be interested in seeing like a no holding back, get from here to there as fast as possible bull run ish race. No silly challenges, no rules against speeding etc. And somehow find a way to make sure no bystanders get killed. Race what you bring type deal. |
i would get rid of the god awefule going around in circles for 4 hours, they should all be on road coarses then maybe ide watch... unless they start throwing hazzards in circle track like oil slicks and water...its like any other sport they all find some part of the car to blame when they dont perform, the guy who won the race has the same tires you claim suck admit defeat get over it

For stock car racing like NASCAR claims to be, I would put them back in some modified form of factory equipment on smaller tracks. Fast is great, but what is the thrill of everyone being able to hold it wide open until someone makes a mistake and causes such a violent wreck that it is only a matter of time before someone gets seriously hurt.
Formula1, I would take away wing, as they did, but I would give them back ground effects. The issue most seem to point to in modern F1 is that the cars are way too aero sensitive. Smaller wings mean less turbulence to a car coming up from behind and the grip of ground effects can't be messed up just because another car is around. I believe it would let the cars race closer to one another. Sports car racing, I would want to get more dual race weekends like in the old days. GT1 and GT2 are great series and thriving today, sometimes operating under different names. I think it would be great for the manufacturers and an easy way to get more small teams involved to bring back the GT3/GT4 formulas to get even closer to stock versions out on the track. GT4 is basically the same as SCCA stock, change tires, shocks, and add safety equipment and get out on the track. GT3 was similar, but allowed for some bolt ons to get them rolling a bit faster. Gotta get rid of the made up cars like the Pontiac GXP-R while they are at it. |
Probably a far stretch but lets get Trans Am racing back, we'll put some new Camaros, Challengers, & some Mustangs up against eachother.

Rule #1 of any racing series, the Fox NASCAR broadcast team gets shot the first day of the season. Oh my god, listening to these guys is horrible.

I grew up on NASCAR, and I still remember watching races in th 80s when the cars were still relatively close to their showroom counterparts.
I would love to see NASCAR mandate stock chassis w / full cage, 4" spoilers front and rear, and showroom engines with only a standard set of bolt-on tweaks allowed (intake / exhaust / tuning / etc). Set a standard range of tire sizes, and let them run what they want from any manufacturer. And the most important rule - NO LEVELING THE PLAYING FIELD! If a manufacturer is upset that they aren't winning, let them redesign their car or just deal with it. - Justin |

if i could make changes, i would worry less about the cars than everyone else seems to, and more about the driving. the truck series and the nationwide series would be TRUE feeder systems much like indy lites or the formula 1 feeders. no bouncing up to sprint cup just because a sponsor likes you. and in turn, no going down to the other series if you have a full time sprint cup ride. they should also kill the top 35 ********, bring back a couple provisionals, and make everyone qualify every week. guys shouldn't be able to qualify in the top 10 and not make the race because some jackass has a few more points than him. they need to get back to catering the races to the fan, right now they are catering the races and the broadcasts to the sponsors on the cars. and fox is completely out of control |

This is a theoretical discussion about racing. I watched the race because there was no other racing on and the news doesn't come on until later. It wasn't a bad race, actually somewhat interesting between the track apparently going away and the number of guys who hurt and blew motors. It was interesting to see the number of guys managing to pull the full counter steer, dirt tracker move through the corners and the tri oval and it never really came to tears somehow. That was also the first time I have ever seen, in any form of motorsports, on any level, someone actually do a backwards victory lap. As in, using reverse. I have seen guys turn around and drive the track in the opposite direction, people spin across a line for a win, and even a car end up backwards in a pit stall before, but gotta say the lap in R was a new one. So fanboi, is my NASCAR review horrible enough for you? I still don't think the cars are technological wonders, I still think their aero sucks, I still don't believe they are the "best drivers in the world", and I still don't see how anyone can justify spending that much money on tickets that don't even get you into the back pits. But it still wasn't a bad race. |

Heh, I will stick to sports cars, Rolex 24 pass with full back pit and infield access for Thursday through Sunday, $85. For $140 you can get a pass with all that, Daytona 500 Club access and the opportunity to take a pair of parade laps around the endurance circuit in your personal vehicle. Tough deal to beat :)

At Daytona and Sebring, your ticket is your parking permit. At Daytona we always stay at the Ramada right across the street, out of the old tunnel, but we park the car inside as soon as we get there to claim a little real estate along the fence to watch the racing, take a nap if needed, and for someplace to hide if it rains. :) I am hoping by mid summer I will have my money saved so that I can make my arrangements to get back to the Daytona 24 and Sebring 12 in 2010 :) |
