Jeep people...

My brothers got a 96 Jeep cherokee sport. Starter is toast. I got a new one for him on the cheap.how hard is it to change? im looking to do it for him so he can throw me a few bucks lol

Ian 03-15-2009 01:58 PM

its easy.

sweetbmxrider 03-15-2009 02:09 PM

yeah its wide open under there. i think you could even take the wires off from up top if you wanted.

90FormulaWS6 03-15-2009 04:15 PM

ive swaped mine in a parking lot in under 20 mins; no jack

Tru2Chevy 03-15-2009 04:32 PM

Just as easy, if not easier, than your normal SBC starter swap. If he gives you $10 to swap it you're still coming out ahead :)

X whatever. Piece of cake. Just bring both metric and standard sockets for the two bolts holding the starter to the block. One is metric, one is standard. Totally weird.

NastyEllEssWon 03-18-2009 03:39 AM

if you take off the oil filter you can do the starter from the top

TransAm619 03-18-2009 10:30 AM

thanks guys.. starter was a breeze. truck still wont start but thats not my problem lol. i did what i told him id do which was to put the new starter on

Tru2Chevy 03-18-2009 05:37 PM

Tell him to join: www.jeepforum.com

The XJ (Cherokee) section has a pretty big group of people who should be able to help him out.

Squirrel 03-19-2009 12:45 AM

TransAm619 03-19-2009 03:59 AM

New battery and terminals last week. im lost as to whats wrong with his p.o.s

79T/A 03-19-2009 09:19 AM

Sounds like on the electrical side, all you have left to check is whether or not you're getting spark. I believe the 4.0 still had a distributor in '96.

Is it getting fuel?

Yea, Check fuel and spark. Cherokee's didn't get the coil rail until 2000, so it's still got the dizzy.

obviosuly if the starter is turning the motor you didnt do it wrong. Other than that there is 100 things that could be wrong with it, like any other fuel injected car. I think im going to get a v8 ZJ next as an offroad/fun/poor weather/utility vehicle. My firebird or 924 cant hold much in the way of anything

Make sure to keep enough money set aside for rebuilding the transmission
