Rear end

Does anyone no a year from 82-92 that was a bigger rear end then a 7.5". Money is tight becuase i just dropped 1300 for a tranny and spohn torque arm kit and now more for a driveshaft so i was going to go to a junkyard.

The only "stock" 82-92 rear that wasn't a 7.5" 10 bolt were the Dana 44s found in the 92 Firehawks (only 25 of 'em). GM never put anything else under the 3rd gens, so you won't find anything common (although GMPP did sell the bolt in Dana 44s for a while - I have one ready to go in my car :) ).

IMO, either drop the coin on a good aftermarket replacement (9 inch, 12 bolt, or Dana 60) or just buy a stock 10 bolt from another 3rd gen on the cheap to get you by until you can afford the proper aftermarket replacement.

You can always get an aftermarket posi / gears / axles / diff cover / etc, for the 7.5" but they are all only patches for a small, weak design.

as far as stockers go, the only real change was that after 87 they got 28 spline axles.

What about the Australian 9 bolt borg warner rearends with the 28 spline axles from 87+ cars. I dont know what size they are but they were stock in the thirdgens and arnt 10 bolts and are def stronger than a stock 10 bolt, good upgrade if you can find it cheap and your on a budget.

I just sold one not too long ago for 200 bucks with calipers rotors pads brake lines diff pinion- everything! It was 3:27 gear ratio too, posi in good working condition.
Their might be a few floating around thirdgen.org too might wanna check their classifieds

The 9bolt is not really much stronger than a 10bolt. It is stronger and has way better hype behind it, but it isn't a way to save money from buying a real rear.

And aftermarket support for the 9 bolt is practically non-existent.

save ur money and do it right, by the time ur done dicking around with stock rears, u could have bought a bolt in 12 bolt 9" or dana

Yes you are both right but if your looking for a slight upgrade, esp if you have a non posi drum rear currently for 150-250 bucks for EVERYTHING to swap over a stock 9 bolt to hold you 6 months to a year until you can afford a built rear sounds like the best way to go if you really cant wait.

If you want this to be the last rear you put in the car no a 9 bolt isnt the way to go, like tim said their is almost no aftermarket parts available but it has it advantages for the low cost.

& beefing up a 10 bolt to hold 450 hp costs 3/4 of a built 12 bolt, which the 10 bolt will only handle 450 IF THAT.

Either way if your rear is fine def do as your planning on and hold out until the fund are their for a good rear that will last.
