decisions, decisions

So the trans in the mercedes is starting to slip. bad. I just did the ball joints cuz one seperated, then did all the brakes, then a wheel bearing went bad so I replaced that whole knuckle & have a spare for the other side in case it goes bad.

Now I do have some options

1) junk/sell the car, put all effort into the camaro being 100% streetable (which now is just fixing an exhaust leak, fixing an exxhaust rattle, replacing/repairing a leaky heater core hose, installing the wideband and tuning it, and going over everything for anything that may have been overlooked or misplaced/miswired/misrouted [car runs fine though so thats just more of a double checking to be safe thing]). Use it as a DD for a month or so which I don't want to do but probably could if I had to, then i wont have to worry about driving for 7 months or so

2) a friend found a trans for 250 with a warranty - buy that and put it in, and hope that the car doesnt decide to have another issue now that this ones fixed. keep using this as dd for a month or so, then have 7 months or so where i dont need a car and can sell it or fix it.

Other thing with this car is, the engine doesnt have too much life left IMO and spits oil everywhere (wierd as hell pcv system on it), and the car needs: shocks, blower motor, tires. Car could also use a bunch of rear control arm bushings (theres 5 arms), motor mounts, body work in the front if i want it to pass inspection in december, and a new muffler (the old one broke so its off the car for now, didnt change the volume and i couldnt take the rattling anymore)

I've also wanted to get rid of the car for a while because it needs at least 92 octane, gets 18-21 mpg, and doesnt have cupholders. At the same time though money's getting a little tight for a new beater, and this car does take a beatng and then some.

Actually, after typing this out it's pretty clear in my mind that I should just cut my losses on this car... but wth, I'll post the poll anyway

Cut your losses - get rid of the benz.

Camaro won't be a daily driver.

Buy my wife's elantra!!!! It's for sale - good daily driver too!

sounds like the best option

or to save up some more money.....sell/scrap the benz, DD the camaro for a month and while you can't drive buy a decent beater during that time

Mike 05-04-2009 01:46 PM

let it keep slipping for a month, junk it, and save for the 7 months

Kojak 05-04-2009 03:10 PM

Sell the Mercedes and the Camaro or part it out. Buy a decent DD that will last you and when you have sufficient funds start a new project.

I only offered that option cause I thought the tranny was the only real issue, 250 isn't much but there is also the fluids and possiblilty of needing others parts once you start removing the tranny. I would totally cut your loses in this case. Not worth the 250 and especially the effort to swap the tranny if you are going to have to fix all the other issues as well.

run it into the ground. when its dead, call one of the junkers in the newspapers. they usually come out within a few hours and give you like 300 bucks cash for your junker
