timing chain and oil pump genIII

How good is the slp oil pump and timing chain kit? Ill be doing my k member and a-arms soon along with my oil pan gasket so I figure with 116k on the clock i should do those items. Thanks in advance.

Saitin 05-04-2009 07:00 PM

well I have a stock ls1 oil pump and chain with less then 5k miles on them if you are interested int hem.

JSPERFORMANCE 05-04-2009 09:35 PM

The SLP kit is very good stuff. By the way if you are going to go as far as changing the chain and pump why not do the cam as well?

JerzLT1 05-04-2009 10:14 PM

Josh is like that little devil sitting on your shoulder... lol

JSPERFORMANCE 05-04-2009 10:16 PM

Yeah and I shot the angel that sat on the other one!!!!

LTb1ow 05-05-2009 08:10 AM

Thats a whole new can of worms, at 116k the springs will def need to be replaced, valve seals etc etc....

But you get to play with magnet sticks! lol....

JSPERFORMANCE 05-05-2009 08:26 AM

These are all the usual things that get replaced when the cam is changed out for one with more lift and duration anyways. I am not sure what "can of worms" and "magnet sticks" you are talking about.

LTb1ow 05-05-2009 08:28 AM

If you don't wanna pull the heads on an LSX, you use the pen magnets to hold up the lifters, or I guess there may be some fancy tool for it... And can of worms is when you start on a simple project and then overload yourself and it never gets finished...

Fancy tool, pretty slick.

JSPERFORMANCE 05-05-2009 08:30 AM

I assume you are speaking from experience? Because I have never had to do it that way. And if a cam swap is overwhelming then dont bother with the timing chain and pump.

LTb1ow 05-05-2009 08:31 AM

I dunno?

On my engine, you just pull the lifters out, I was just reading up on LS1 cam swaps, and thats what I found....

camaro2you 05-05-2009 08:33 AM

Would it not be needed to change out the lifters to throw a cam in? Since the heads need to be removed to change them out then you get into the game of might as well yank the motor and put in new bearings and bolts......

JSPERFORMANCE 05-05-2009 08:40 AM

Shownomercy - please do not give tech advice on a subject you have no first hand knowledge in. Reading on the internet does not make you an expert and may cause someone to get confused when you give incomplete information.

Camaro 2 you - the lifters do not NEED to be replaced with most mild aftermarket grinds, but you are correct in thinking the "might as well" direction. In your case a simple cam and spring swap is not all that difficult since you will already have the pump and chain off.

camaro2you 05-05-2009 08:42 AM

What cam and spring selection do you recommend to give me a little power gain and a nice little thump?

JSPERFORMANCE 05-05-2009 08:48 AM

Your best bet is to talk to your parts supplier if you want a reccomendation. If you would like us to do the job give me a call and we can talk.

KirkEvil 05-05-2009 10:21 AM

I think SLP stuff is just overpriced for what you get. You would not need the double roller timing chain if you are staying stock or mild cam. An LS2 chain is enough and 1/4 the price.

Josh, when you are doing a cam swap without pulling the heads, do you just remove the rockers, rods then spin it over to push the lifters up. How safe is it to assume the lifters will get stuck there while pulling and installing the cam? Thanks.

JW 05-05-2009 10:29 AM

I refuse to help with this Cody if John is there doing annoying odd things haha!

JW :D

In most cases in engines under 80000 miles the lifters will stay put. We use the dowels most of the time just in case they dont.

NastyEllEssWon 05-05-2009 08:05 PM

dowels ftw

KirkEvil 05-05-2009 10:18 PM

So, the lifter tool that SNM posted is actually the same as using dowels

NJ Torque 05-05-2009 10:23 PM

I didnt do lifters on my cam... now I have lifter float... not making nearly as much power as I should.

KirkEvil 05-05-2009 10:28 PM

Anyway, camaro2you, why are you looking at just an oil pump and timing chain?

Thats what Matt at TTP explained to me... Go figure, right...

BarneyMobile 05-05-2009 11:09 PM

maybe he meant valve float?

KirkEvil 05-05-2009 11:12 PM

lifter float as in the internals of the lifter are remaining collapsed at high rpm, or do you need longer pushrods? Im with BM on valve float, what springs are you running?
