Heads Question

Just one quick Question. I have a set of 241's that I am looking to get worked. The 1 machine shop said it would be 800.00 p&p with a valve job and another Machine shop in collingswood said that they would just advise me in doing a Valve job for 250.00. I have a 228 228 cam and am just looking for around 400 RWHP. They said that a valve job and that cam it will get me pretty close to that number. Is this true? They told me they can get me between 10-20 hp from the valve job and that a P&P would only net me another 5-10hp for another $550. Right now My WS6 makes 340 rwhp and 350 rwtq. Like I said I only want around 400 right now. down the road I am going to do a forged motor with a great set of heads but for now I want a cheap build. So far I have spent 150 for the 241's, head bolts, and Cam. I still need springs and gaskets. Any advice would be welcome. Thanks.

Did you go to withers in collingswood. That guy is pretty good with that kind of stuff

Have you thought about doing a set of 243 (LS2/LS6) heads?

Thats who I talked to about the valve job work. He basically said it is not worth the money to port the heads when all I am looking for is around 400rwhp.

I thought about it. Whats the difference flow wise between worked 241 heads and stock 243 heads??

Here's something I found on ls1tech.com
Quote:

Stock LS1 Flow #'s
Intake:
.100 67.1
.200 127.6
.300 181.3
.400 218.8
.500 236.4
.600 242.3
Exhaust:
.100 55.0
.200 99.6
.300 136.2
.400 157.6
.500 170.4
.600 178.1

Modified CNC LS1 TEA Stage I (stock valves) flow #'s
Intake
.100 65.1
.200 142.4
.300 206.6
.400 242.0
.500 257.3
.550 264.1
.600 269.6
Exhaust
.100 56.0
.200 111.9
.300 148.1
.400 178.0
.500 200.2
.550 210.0
.600 216.3

GM LS6/LS2
Lift Int Exh
.100 65 58
.200 138 113
.300 214 157
.400 261 191
.500 292 210
.525 295 212
.550 285 214
.600 282 218
The flow rates look very similar between the 243 heads and ported LS1 heads. Looks like a good used set of LS2 heads go for about 400-500 bucks. Also I believe the combustion chambers on the 243 heads are more efficient then the ls1 heads.

Thanks for those numbers.
