Preparing to go green...

clutch that is:mrgreen:. I just spent the past few hours in the garage preparing the car for the clutch install that should happen tomorrow. Let's hope fed ex actually delivers the clutch when it's supposed to come. Here are some current pictures of the car http://s168.photobucket.com/albums/u...t=IMAG0149.jpg

Weight reduction::lol:

Now I get to spend my birthday finishing up the removal and install of the clutch. Nothing like spending $850 + getting dirty on your birthday, but it'll all be worth it when the car actually makes it down the track in a few short weeks.

stock driveshaft yes...steel or aluminum? Idk

Mike 06-05-2009 11:28 PM

aluminum would be silver unless thats just crap covering it, looks like the stock surface rust of a steel one

BigAls87Z28 06-05-2009 11:38 PM

yes, looks like a steelie? WTF, especially on a 6spd car?

NJ346 06-05-2009 11:50 PM

well rust would make sense if it's the original one with 182K miles.:shrug: It is pretty light, but I do agree that it seems more like a steel one. O well steel>aluminum for strength right? :lol:

Mike 06-06-2009 12:07 AM

sure, but i didnt think any ls1 six speed cars came with steel

Yea I believe so too. I'll have to look into it tomorrow. I'm not too worried, it was taking stock clutch dumps from 5800 without a problem.:-P

Mike 06-06-2009 12:15 AM

so did mine......6200 broke it though :)

My rev limiter is set at 6200, so theoretically I would probably end up launching at like 6150 at the most...so I'm good to go:lol:. Anyway I'm going to bed. I hope to have the car back up and running by 4 pm as long as the clutch shows up in the am. It's in jersey now and fed ex is usually good, but knowing my luck, I'll be the last stop tomorrow and wont get it until 7 pm at night.

Some 6 speeds came with 3.23's for some reason (not many) but they had steel shafts.

Check the build sheet for RPO GU5. I would bet it has it, either that or someone swapped out the shaft or broke the original one.

NastyEllEssWon 06-06-2009 02:17 AM

98s and 99s steel driveshaft was available on six speed cars. i forget why....

no, all 6 spds came with 3.42s. I've checked the gears many times and I know for a fact it's 3:42s.

So going green means you cut a whole in the floor and are going to do it flintstones style?

;)

Looks good Vin, fun thing to be doing on your bday....

you'll see the where the whole "going green" thing came from once the clutch get's here8-). And yea I know. What a day-spend $850 and get to spend the day working on the car....such a great b-day. It'll be worth it though next time I go to the track and watch the rear explode on a launch:lol:

sweetbmxrider 06-06-2009 12:08 PM

green....yes....

who'd you go with for the clutch?

LTb1ow 06-06-2009 12:18 PM

I have sold about 300+ LS1 driveshafts, I use to buy them in bulk from salvage's yards. I can tell you for certain that all 6 speed LS1's did not come with 3.42's. Maybe 99.9999999% but not all.

nothing like hot spots: http://photos-h.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos..._6174623_n.jpg

I'm taking a little break for now. Gotta research what all the bolts need to be torqued down to. Hopefully I'll have the trans ready to be mounted up by 4pm and then have the car on the road by 6 in time for tonight. Btw, I ran to DMV and no longer have the cinderella license :D

It's official: :nod::nod::nod:I HAVE GONE GREEN!:nod::nod::nod:

Trans is currently held in by 6 outta the 8 bolts. I'll be messing with the last 2 bolts for the next half an hour and then finish up the install, fill the trans with fluid, and rip the console out so I can reinstall the shifter. ETA: 7:30

Very nice and I give you credit doing a clutch install yourself.

Thanks. I'm very picky when it comes to people who work on my car. I had a friend over when I was dropping the trans and one to help me lift the trans back in. I just took it for a ride around the block and the combination of the Tick master cylinder and monster clutch is amazing. I'm heading out to go see how many miles I can put on the car in one night.
