Wheel wells have been painted using 3M univeral rubberized undercoating.
Driver side strut was been painted silver. Passenger side strut is next.
First picture is before.

And now the gore.
I pulled the kicker panel and carpet to get to the backside of the wheel well to fill in a seam. (And thus the painters tape on the drivers side in the first post.
When I replaced the carpet a 2 years ago, the was a small hole. I spray it with rust inhibitor and forgot about it. I had no idea that the rot extended up to the back side of the wheel well at the time. Or that it would get this bad within 2 years.

wheel well looks nice. floor pan, not so much. my buddy's third gen has rotted out floor pans just behind the front seats. he bought another car.

Niiiiiiiiice. That driver side floor rot is the reason why I parted ways with my first third gen.

Salt water, no. It has been parked about 40 yards from a lake for the past 8 months.
Other things that led to its rusting: T-top leakage, bad window motor that Previous owner thought would be easier to leave halfway down than fixing it, and it being driven throughout winter.
The rust is the next project.

WOWZER!!! I just watched my neighbor replace the floorpan off his turdgen just the other day. before you buy the floorpan that Bonzo linked to you, make sure to inspect the frame. check where the K-frame joins to the frame rails underneath and look at the rear of the frame rails to see they are still solidly attached. if so then go ahead yank out that sawzall, cut out that **** and MIG weld it back to its good health.
UNIBODIES + RUST = HELL

I didn't want to stand out from the rest the third gen owners on here.
All I need is a jeep and I'm part of the group.

Pulled the carpet back some more and found more rust. :-?

Tru2Chevy 07-05-2009 03:19 PM

Damn, sucks to hear....definitely time for some new pans.

And Matt....even mine isn't up on jackstands, it's sitting in the driveway on all 4 tires (and 3 of them even have air in them ;) ).

Anti_Rice_Guy 07-06-2009 12:53 PM

I figured out why it happened. The seam in the wheel well led directly back to rusted area. This rust was covered by padding, and on top of that padding was more rudder padding. So the water that came into the car from the wheel well gap had to place to go. It was just soaked into the padding, and then on top of the metal.

CHRIS67 07-06-2009 02:37 PM

Chevy High Performance had a decent article on replacing the pans. Might help you decide if you can do it yourself or have it done. From what I remember they are a pain in the arse.
