carb wont work

I took the carb off my 84 lg4. It ran OK before, but as soon as the secondaries started to open it sputtered and could hardly accelerate. I took it off yesterday and sprayed it down with carb clean, let it sit overnight, blew it off with compressor, and now it wont work. The car runs if i dump gas in the primaries but thats it. Is there anything i could have damaged with air pressure or letting it sit with carb cleaner too long? I made sure everything was hooked up no vac leaks made sure the gasket was on good. Pretty frustrating since i was just trying to make the car run a little better now it wont run at all

I'm wondering if you damaged the floats and they are stuck closed somehow. Is there no fuel coming out when you open the throttle?

Carb type? Did anything else anywhere change?

I am no carb expert but if you doused it carb clean and then just blew it off, wouldn't all the crap you loosened up with the cleaner sink into the bowls and then clog jets?

WildBillyT 07-13-2009 02:21 PM

What type of carb? Are you getting any fuel flow?

Carb type? How long did it sit without being used?

The car idled and drove fine a day ago, but still no top end power(only sat off the car for a day). Its a q-junk, factory lg4 305 with the TPS sensor and the other plug on top. I didnt really get the inside/bowls with the carb cleaner just sorta sprayed down in and around the secondaries and the outside to clean it up a little. The carb is pumping up with fuel and i have good pressure but no its pretty much not making its way into the intake. Should i visibly see fuel from the accelerator pump? Im pretty sure i messed up the float or got some gunk in the jets like suggested. Oh well im pretty sure the carb needs a good rebuild anyways. May pick up another qjet from chrisinNJ(cant remember exact spelling). Oddly enough with all the lg4/l69 ownage ive never had a problem with a q-jet so idk how to diagnose or fix them ...OR i just had a holley in its place. I had an edelbrock carb on my work van too and that never gave me a problem either

you should be able to see the accelerator pumps spraying the fuel. Sounds like your right in thinking you clogged something during the cleaning. Clean it again see what happens couldn't hurt to flush it one more time.

I personally wouldn't rebuild it i would get a Holley 650 DP. It'll give you better tuning and nice crisp throttle response.

Did you check the fuel filter to see if fuel is even getting into the carb? Maybe removing the carb allowed some debris to move around and clog something up.

Yes ive always had good experience with holleys. Wouldnt that be a bit much carb for a stock 305? I wasnt going to rebuild one, but buy one thats already rebuilt. hopefully it is the problem. Its def getting spark, and fuel preussre, and filling up with fuel. And no i cant see the accelerator pump spraying anything so i guess that does mean something bad.

A 600 VS is probably best for your 305

going to a Holley will also mean new intake, distributor too, no?

yeah would require a square flange. I have the vac advance distributor already. Holley does make a spreadbore replacement type of carb but its pretty expensive

You can get an adaptor plate. Yes, they are not optimal, but they do work. I've got one lying around if you decide to go that route.
