it looked and sounded like a perfectly good car

Jersey Mike 08-04-2009 02:17 PM

wow

Firebird92 08-04-2009 04:42 PM

that was sad i would take the engine out first because from what i hear you can give them a rolling shell and there take that for 4500 its all going to the same place anyway.

They wont take a shell. it has to have a running engine when it comes in. The gov. wants all the poor mpg cars off the roads since mpg & emissions go hand & hand.

Tru2Chevy 08-04-2009 05:45 PM

Yes, running cars only.

Once they get turned in, the VIN is tagged so that it can never be registered again, the engine is seized as shown in the video, and they are sent to the scrapyard to be crushed.

I read in the comments that they don't accept cars with over 40,000 miles on them. Is that true?

No, it's possible that they won't accept cars with under 40k though.

yea we were talken about this at work yesturday.... any car that is traded in under cash for clunkers has to be scraped... which is seems kind of a waste to me... i mean im sure alot of these cars have decent body parts on them that could be salvaged... but what the govt wants the govt gets.... apparently... it makes sense that they seized that engine becuase as stated above they want all the bad MPG cars off the road... wont see me trading my firebird in under that hahah...they always find a back door to things... at least this one can benefit some people that want a newer car... but where the "CASH" in the cash for clunkers comes from.... hmmmmm??

91chevywt 08-04-2009 06:27 PM

This is such a terrible idea. Even if I was in the market for a new car and had a "clunker" I would not do this. No thanks, government.

Anybody learn about in history class when acres upon acres of crops were destroyed during the great depression to drive up revenue for farmers? Hear about when Pigs were slaughered and not processed while people were starving? It was called the "Agriculture Adjustment Act." This isn't so different.

maroman88 08-04-2009 07:10 PM

friend of mine had to do this to a perfect 00 grand cherokee... he stated the good ole jeep 4.0 took forever to die!

this whole cash for clunkers is BS and a horrible idea. atleast sell off parts of the cars

yeah that figures. stupid government. its such a waste to destroy these good cars. yes i agree some cars really need to be scrapped but what was so wrong with that olds?? sounded good and all. id rather drive my american cars that get 12-13mpg than some pos import crap that will only break in a thousand miles anyways.

Tru2Chevy 08-04-2009 10:42 PM

I heard ~47% of the new cars were from the big 3. Read it in today's paper.

how much can u strip the car for them to take it

Czop418 08-05-2009 01:51 AM

... Some body on the site is actually thinking about trading his lt1 . !!!!! for C4C !!!!! FTL

V 08-05-2009 05:18 AM

if i didnt sell my denali, thats where it would have gone, same with my dodge ram but it doesnt qualify since the mpg ratings of the diesel are too "good". lol

but in the case of my parents minivan... every about 10 years they get a new car/van, well the currents one is a '01 with over 100k miles, a/c doesnt work(bunch of $ spent on it already), body isnt perfect, rear wiper doesnt work etc... now seriously how much would that be worth as a tarde in, according to Edmunds.. 2100 in average condition, yet it does qualify for the C4C program where they'd get 4500... its kinda a hard deal to pass up... and i dont think many will lose sleep over crushing a minivan...

you are not guaranteed to get the 4500, it is "up to" 4500.(they offered a friend of mine 675)
There is a questionare that you fill out and based on those answers that is what they give you.
Also it doesn't really matter what current shape the vehicle is in as long as it runs.
If the books say it gets 22 mpg but for some reason it only gets 12 it doesn't matter cause they go by what the book says.
The whole C4C program is total horse sh^t.

haha ford haha

WildBillyT 08-05-2009 12:03 PM

So let me get this straight:

1.) Polluting cars are off the road
2.) People with a POS can now get something nicer
3.) About half the new auto sales are domestics, with the Ford Focus being the most popular.

And this program sucks why exactly?

The only beef I had was that classics in CA, AZ, etc would be crushed instead of restored.

Lt1_8U 08-05-2009 01:13 PM

supposedly i heard some dealers will match the amount you get towards a new car from that company. so say you get 4k they match it and you recieve 8k off of a new vehicle. is that true?
