Differentials!!
Who's better Detroit Locker or Eaton? for the stock 10 bolt on the LS1
|
For a 7.5" 10 bolt? Go with a stock Zexel Torsen. No sense in throwing money at a rear that will break elsewhere.

iirc vinny broke the carrier on his 4:10 equipped 10 bolt one of the first few times out with it |
Since I am really not planning to race for now I still have to upgrade my stock rear to handle the extra horsepower of my turbo. So its cheaper to just build a bullet proof 10 bolt for now. It can be done when the car goes in for the turbo upgrade. I know there is several to choose from, like the auburn, eaton, detroit locker. I am doing the axles too so its done right.

If you are dead set on doing it I'd get the locker. Definetly not an auburn since they aren't rebuildable from what I remember.
|
Eaton or auburn diff if you really want to upgrade the 10 bolt. But if you plan on it lasting you, use good axles and make sure you weld/brace the axle tubes.

heres my take on it.. for what it is... and i recommend doin research that the manufacturers sites to see the way the different ones work... its very interesting material... i agree with the zexel torsen recommendation.... besides a spool and locker (which are very noisy around turns... they click and clank dont know if yo uwant that) the torsen is the next strongest thing you can buy... i have a auburn (factory) in my car now... neve rhad a problem... but never really ran any big power through it either... i dont like eaton diffs at all... the fact that they work off clutch packs.... seems redundant to put a part that can wear and fail in a part of the car that is often negleted for maintence... torsen styles are pretty bullet proof and are fairly quiet compared to the locker.... auburn is a good design but im not sure if they were made to handle big power... also look into the detroit tru-trac.... its almost like a torsen style but its a little different.... that interested me when i found that... when i do my rear im going to end up going with a locker... its fool-proof and has been tested time and time again.... but my car also isnt a daily and will be raced... alot.... so i dont mind the clickign around turns.... hope this helps you.... if you have any ?'s about what i wrote just shoot me a PM or somthing... if anybody has anythign esle to add for correct let me know... im not an expert but i have read alot about them...

I really appreciate the insight since I really have to get this done pretty soon. I want everyones opinions and experience. Everything is helpful.

Personally I'd wait and do a 12 bolt, Dana or 9" because you are pretty much tossing money in the trash on the 10 boltm but if you are hell bent on it I would go with a detroit true-trac. Lockers are murder on the street, especially when you are trying to park the car and will most likely speed the demise of a 10 bolt. Keep in mind to beef up a 10 will put you well past half the cost of a good rear.

for the money you spend building up a 10 bolt you can buy a used 9'' for like 15-1800
|
Save for the better rear. If you are easy on the 10-bolt and don't plan on racing on it, it should be fine. I ran my 10-bolt with just a diff support cover but just never launched it hard. It seemed to handle the power when on the juice but like I said, I rarely beat on it from a stop. I even sold my old 10-bolt for some decent money and the buyer is very happy with it.

brian what diff did you end up with for your s60... just trying to get imput because im probably goin the s60 route also... im thinking locker for my car though...

torsen unit is supposed to be one of the strongest for the 10 bolt. I broke it on my 4th pass with 4.10s...had about 60 passes on it with 3.42s. It was also strong enough to snap an axle on me 2 days before it blew itself up. Just about every pass I had on the car was launched at 5500+rpm and almost a straight clutch dump. What clutch are you running? If it's stock...you'll be fine for a while, if it's an aftermarket that grabs, well your **** outta luck because the 10 bolt will break very easily. Btw, the launch isn't what did my 10 bolt in, the 1-2 shift killed it. I ended up picking up a fully optioned 9in(4.11s, tru trac, aluminum case, powder coated, etc.) for $1800. A buddy of mine had an Eaton and killed it on his 2nd pass down the track. So torsen>eaton.
