tire question for an alero

my bro needs new tires on his '99 alero gls, the 2 up front are worn pretty low (fwd) but the rears really arnt that bad. my question is can he just replace the front two for now and the rears later? which would be two different tires

or

does he have to do all four at the same time?

he can leave the back two for now.

As long as they have the same speed rating and size. Just get a decent all season tire and try to buy the same brand when you replace the two rears. Also the brand tires that they have at (lets say) Pep Boys may not be major brands, but they are made by some top name company, and you can save a decent amount of money if you buy them.

What Ed said. Replace the fronts, rotate them to the rear. Bring the old ones up front.
