Dex-Cool
So I wanted to get some feed back on using Dex-Cool in a Gen1 SBC.
I have read that it is more corrosive then regular antifreeze and wanted to know if anyone here has had any experience using it with it in older motors. I have 3 gallons of it sitting in my shed, so the extra cost is not a concern of mine. |
Why bother? Just because it's free?
|
I'd suppose you could use it w/o issue as long as you mix it with distilled water.
I use good old green |
won't it destroy the gaskets?
|
i dunno, it appears to destroy gaskets in the cars that get it from the factory, so i dunno

i switched back to green in my SS when i changed motors. i flushed everything when it was all apart. I had major issues with dexcool in my 95 STS caddy, corroded the freeze out plugs from inside out till they started to leak. total bs. dexcool works ideally if its in a sealed system with NO tap water, however as we know typical coolant systems are NOT sealed and therefore dexcool has issues. at least thats what i got when i looked into my caddy problems and reseaching the switch back to green in my SS.

Yea seems everyone is confirming what I've read online and experienced with my DD....I'll go with the green. Thanks for the input
|
Yeah, it gunks up alot of stuff, and used to eat heatercores in my car like cereal. Now that it's flushed and got the green, I havent had a problem since.
|
JUST FYI... they are discontinuing green.... they arent making it anymore... so once its used up -its used up... im using universal yellow in my car when its finished... cant go wrong with that... dex cool is horrible... its clogged up at least 2 of the water jacket holes in my head gasket when i pulled them off and id be surprised if water would even drip through those holes... dex-cool is big time FTL i wouldnt use it...

stopping green???
|
yea its not bio-degradable... and the new stuff is... they are phasing it out... there is still plenty left...but we dont even carry it at the shop anymore... we just carry universal... cause it goes with everything... every damn car company has their own collant... more cost effective to just carry yellow... toyota-red, honda-green(but not same green) GM-red dexcool, bmw-blue... they all have different ones... but old style green will be gone sooner or later..
|
yeah i hear ya on the skittles of antifreeze jugs. its retarded. i thought you could recycle green though? oh well yellow it is
|
No mooar mean green? :(
I must stockpile. |
they do recycle green... but if you look at the price difference from yellow to green its not worth it.... thats why they have green left because its recycled..... but eventually its going to be no more...
