I know why my car is slow

Ive been a little disappointed with the "off the line " performance on my LS1 .I thought I had 3:23's because of the "1" on the gear indicator ,,I was wrong . Its a GU2 code (2:73's) .But Im actually happy about it . This explains a lot . Now Ive got to order a set of 3:73's and wake this thing up .

MonmouthCtyAntz 10-10-2009 10:05 PM

I thought all the cars w/ the "1" on the indicator were 323 cars...

strange to hear..I feel the off the line performance in my SS is incredible for a dam near stock car. Maybe the 6 speed gives it a different feel?

Yes it does.

My 2.73 geared LS1 felt like a dog to a 3.23 LS1... both auto cars.

yeah six speeds come with like a 3:4x gear ratio stock. i had no problems with my 2:73 geared autos that i had getting off the line. the six speed does pull noticably harder....but those 2:73 cars are nasty on the highway

Thats what I thought .But at speeds over 30 mph my car will kickdown into 1st when I stomp it . I figured something was up . So I checked the build code . GU2 :-?

LT1 cars maybe... my 99 Z28 has 1,2,3,D, with 2.73's.

maroman88 10-11-2009 11:04 AM

my 98's got 1,2,3,D.. was stock with 2:73's, now ive got 3:42's... before u upgrade make sure u get the correct gears for a series 2 carrier, i made the mistake of finding a good deal only to find out they were for a series 3

98tadriver 10-11-2009 11:08 AM

you can tell by looking at the sticker on the inside of the door GU2=2.73 GU5=3.23 GU6=3.42

Yea the gearing definately makes a huge differance. I remember when I had my 97z I test drove 2 new 98 TA's to find out what the whole houpla was w/ this new LS1 lol. One was a 323 car and it felt great....the other was a 273 and I couldnt believe what a dog it was down low...I was comming from a stalled/gear'd LT1 but still....Definately throw some 373's in there and it'll be a whole new car

Wow! With those 2.73's the motor must have been under 2000 rpm at 65. Going from 2.73 to 3.73 is about a 37% increase in rpm. So if the engine was turning 1800 at 65mph, w/2.73, it will be turning at 2466 rpm with the 3.73's. Just something to keep in mind. And your fuel economy will take a real hit too.

But you sure will be able to smoke em!

What's that? Is it like VTEC!?

Jersey Mike 11-01-2009 01:16 PM

I'm getting about 75 miles to a tank less than when I was stock  At this point, how much worse could it get with 3:73

OP- yeah, I was disappointed when I found out I had 2.73 and not 3.23s too. Oh well, at least you know that it can be upgraded.
