HELP! Milkshake Oil Mixture? + Overheating! HELP!
1991 Camaro RS - 350 Carb Swap from chevelle (Original TBI 305)
350 (Supposedly rebuilt) and I did an oil change and we got this milkshake mixture coming out. I also keep overheating after a few minutes of running. I'm thinking because I'm mixing either antifreeze and oil or water and oil it's overheating. I noticed the residue when I wen't to put new valve cover gaskets on. It starts up fine and runs pretty good (minus a little valve lash and a now broken motor mount). So far the advice I've gotten was Head Gasket Blown. My question is The Heads themselves or just the head gasket needs to be replaced? Any help is highly appreciated and welcome. --I put a new dual fan, hi performance 180 degree thermostat and gasket and radiator works fine. The timing is also correct and firing order. New Edelbrock RPM Intake, New Holley Carb and Distributor with Cap n Rotor fully done with 50,000 volt coil, Accel 8MM wires and plugs, Hedman Longtubes and Flowmasters 3in. American Thunder Cat Back Dual, Custom made Y pipe. |
The heads need to be checked and milled when you do the head gaskets anyways.. Not very common for early iron heads to crack but it does happen..

Thanks JS. We spoke about 2 months back. I have the teal 91 camaro rs and the 84 trans am. My name is Tim not sure if you remember our conversation. I know you probrobly get a number of calls a day. I'm trying to get both cars out to you as soon as they can run for more than a half hour without problems lol. So should i change the head gasket and see what happens? and what can you tell me about valve lash and what to do about it?

Like I said you should remove the heads, have them checked and milled and replace them using new head gaskets.. If you have hydraulic lifters they are usually 1/2 to 3/4 turn preload from 0 lash.

Yea sounds like a head gasket. All i have to say is drain that oil. Anti-freeze is notorious for eating the bavit (spelling!?) away on the bearings. And then a 125 dollar job turns into a new motor. As for the heads be safe you dont want to do it twice get them checked and or milled. Also when adjusting the lash. Make sure your lifters are pumped up all the way.

If this was my car here is what I would do:
If you get get a hold of a coolant pressure checker: Pressurize the system for 15-20 minutes, then pull the spark plugs an turn the engine over an see if any coolant sprays out? That is one way of checking before you pull the heads off, and might tell you what side? If you've got oil/coolant in the pan, but not pushing white smoke out the exhaust it could be more then a head gaskets. Intake cracked, could even be the block? Do you know if the block was previously decked? That can sometimes cause the bores to leak? How full/overfull was the pan? Was it high up on the dip stick? If you had 1+ quart of water in the oil then you might want to tear the entire engine down and get it flushed and the bearings replaced. |
ummmmm... it is also possible for a bad intake gasket. i have seen that several times. bad intake gasket/improperly installed can cause coolant in the engine without white smoke in the exhaust.
there is a test that you can have done @ a shop. it includes a dye that is mixed with your coolant to test for any exhaust gases/fuel in the coolant. this will tell you if coolant is entering the combustion chamber. this way you know if it is a head gasket or intake/head wterjacket problem. see kevin @ jeffs budget brakes & mufflers on rt.88 in pt.pleasant if your close enough. he is a cert. gm tech that is a buddy of mine and could help you with the test. |
I dont think its a Intake Gasket the dont have water jacket's on the intake.

For lt1's i didnt see any water jackets on the heads for the intake. That why the made goofy ass reverse cooling.
EDIT: I saw rebuilt 350 automatically aussumed it was a 92 my baddd :( |

Yea I only read the beginning of the post. I automatically aussumed it was a 92+ LT1 swap but hey you know what the say about assuming.
