LS4 Power??

A kid came out to our meet last night with a GXP Gran Prix with the V8 LS4 he has heads cam and supporting mods and makes 290 at the wheels!?! he put L^ heads and cam on a LS4 doesn't that seem like the bottle neck??

BonzoHansen 11-16-2009 12:49 PM

I think his issue is the wrong wheels spin. More HP ain't gonna work to well in the long run.

L^? What heads? LS6?

Nitr0racing21 11-16-2009 01:13 PM

Ha yes LS6 not L^6 I try to tell him in my opinion its the heads cam package but he insisted that it wasn't IDK why he thought he wouuld gain much from stock stuff if he put a bigger cam rockers springs and a intake but I would like to talk to some LS4 guys if there are any one here.

KirkEvil 11-16-2009 02:35 PM

I dont know much about the LS4/5.3L, but the hp to the wheels may seem low because of where he got it dyno'd or tuned. And although the LS6 heads flow better, the chambers are larger than the 5.3 heads...less compression.

He should see gains, but dont expect the same type of gains as you would from an ls1 with ls6 heads and cam.

LS4 is a fancy way of saying truck motor.

Nitr0racing21 11-16-2009 02:43 PM

he raced some 300 RWHP cars and got destroied by them he was trying to defend the heads and cam set up and I tried telling him a custom setup would be alot better

KirkEvil 11-16-2009 02:57 PM

what are the specs on the cam, and where did he get it tuned?

Nitr0racing21 11-16-2009 03:03 PM

IDK the place he got it tuned but its a LS6 cam which I think is his bottle neck

KirkEvil 11-16-2009 03:12 PM

theres nothing wrong with an ls6 cam, but its not going to net him much. From what Ive read from the 5.3 guys, the 224/224 is popular and around the 230's is big. The ls6 is 204/218.

I would guess that a 5.3 with the ls6 h/c should be around 340-350 hp with proper supporting mods and tune.

You said he got smacked by cars with 300 hp...a 50 hp difference is not that big taking into consideration other variables like weight and gear. This is also based off the assumption that his car is properly setup.

Unloading the tires at launch is a bad thing.

Frosty 11-18-2009 06:49 PM

That sounds really low for power to the wheels....especially with heads/cam(even if they are OEM parts).

NastyEllEssWon 11-18-2009 06:57 PM

ls6 heads on a ls4 are redundant. the ls4 comes with ls6 heads stock. as for the ls6 cam im going to call bs on that since the bolt patterns at the end of the cam for the ls4 are single bolt, where as the ls6 cams are 3 bolts. also im pretty sure any cam for the ls4 is going to have to be custom ground especially since you still need to get around the DOD

sounds like his cars stock with exhaust

I thought they had AFM, not DOD (like the G8 or Camaro).

Same thing, just a name change.

Oh, wait, am I'm thinking of VVT? With the cam phasers? AFM is electronic and VVT has mechanical components, no? Stupid new confusing things. lol

S.J.SLEEPER 11-18-2009 07:26 PM

alot of guys get rid of the dod. and install standard lifters due to the dod failures.
so it is possible for the ls6 cam in it w/dod out of it.

not sticking up for the guy. I think he's a moron.

should have slapped l76/l92 heads & intake if he wanted more hp without breakin the bank.

yeah but then he'd still need an adapter made for the bolts in the cam sprocket...

edit:......also as someone to mention it has ls6 heads on his mod list, when it comes stock doesnt sound very reputable

not neccesarily, just use a 3 bolt cam sprocket.

ANYWAY, the real s*** here is that the dude showed up and thought he was talking good s*** that he got ls6 heads & cam. when indeed he probably has nothing done and he is full chet.

ls1 ls2 ls6 ls4 lq4 lg9 all of them have the same basis for an engine and almost all parts are interchangable.

my motor is consisted of ls1, lq9,ls7 & l76/92 parts.

BonzoHansen 11-18-2009 08:14 PM

Just doing some learning, thanks.

NastyEllEssWon 11-18-2009 08:19 PM

i also thought the fact that the ls4 block is shorter is the reason you couldnt use a regular ls cam....like i said i only touch base on these...this is just from what ive read over the past few years sicne its been out

BonzoHansen 11-18-2009 08:24 PM

FWIR the crank is shorter. Doesn't sound useful for swaps.

Thats what I figured but he said 290 WHP with heads cam exhaust ful supporting mods and a intake mainfold tune seemed low as **** to me he raced a Coballt SS stock besides a pullley and got steadily waalked

Do you have the info on their slips? Would be interesting to see how they each got off the line and what the traps were.
