Hydroboost Installed
So yesterday morning I finally buttoned up my Hydroboost setup.
The booster was out of an 84 1/2 ton diesel pickup. Since my engine only makes 7-8 in. of vacuum, this has really made my brakes a whole lot better. Not to mention I can reach my clutch master cylinder now that the globe is finally gone. I tried to take a few pics of the important steps, but forgot most of the small ones. Ill post them later as they arent online yet. Just felt like sharing. |
Very cool. Let us know how it works over the long run. I'm a fan of the hydroboost over electric vac pumps because they are just way too noisy for my taste.

This is after I cleaned up the unit and bored out the master cylinder mounting hole large enough to mount a thirdgens master (the master cylinders on pickups are smaller in diameter) I also added a larger return spring for a faster pedal return.

I decided to attach it in such a way that made it adjustable. I then made a plate to attach the unit to the original spacer that attaches to the firewall. I made this plate out of the license plate mounting surface of a factory 1982 F150 bumper heh. I also used a hub nut off of a dana 60 to attach the unit to the plate as they share the same thread. http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b6...s/IMAG0164.jpg Had to cut a small portion of the original rubber tube-like thing in the spacer (after I ground off the rivets attaching it to the vacuum booster) to make room for the hub nut, the fit was nearly flawless. http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b6...s/IMAG0165.jpg This is the final product. (for now, I still need to make and use AN lines as I'm still using the stock 84 Sierra lines.) The fit is really nice and makes clutch work much easier. http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b6...s/IMAG0166.jpg http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b6...s/IMAG0168.jpg I know its only been a day or two, but I love how the brakes feel, they feel more responsive (It doesn't make sense to me as the pedal travel should be the same) and much much more consistent, but I think thats mostly because my engine only made 7 inches of vacuum. Any comments and/or questions welcome. ~Jeff. Almost forgot, I also rebuilt my power steering pump and added a double return reservoir. |
Nice work, looks great!
