tick tick tick....
This is driving me crazy. New header gasket, wires are not arcing, plugs in tight etc.
http://i924.photobucket.com/albums/a...h_MOV02768.jpg Only thing is perhaps a loose rocker? But I am pretty sure this doesn't sound like one. I dunno really. :-x |
Buy ls1?
J/K, get us a sound clip? Check if an accessory is making the ticking? |
You are a fail.
That IS a sound clip. |
You have ls7 lifters right?
|
Yea, I am gonna yank all the spark plugs on Tuesday, make sure they are all good to go, and then re do preload etc. If that doesn't solve it, lifters are coming out. Which is a big annoyance more than anything else. Less than 2k on em too...
Ok, verified it is not a loose plug... as I told you Kirk, its an LS1 thing... lol |
Honestly I don't hear anything wrong. That sounds normal to me - like a sewing machine.

get the perceys gaskets!
|
Yea, I will Brandon, as far as I can tell the rockers are all good, so it may be an exhaust leak, hard to tell really.
http://www.jegs.com/i/Percys/760/660...oductId=744841 Those are the ones right ? |
Screw those Percy's. Felpro 1406s are less expensive and work just as good as the Percy's.
|
sounds normal to me too
|
nah in person, there is a solid tick coming from the ds valve cover area.

What happens when you rev it up?
|
It increases with RPM, but its not entirely constant, like there are some RPMs where it will go away and others where it will be very clear.
|
Did you retorque the header gasket after heat cycling?
|
Yes sir, I have a 3/8 wrench in the car, pop the hood and verify they are tight frequently.
|
Are the headers flat and not warped? Any sign of leaking when you removed the old headers. When you install the header gaskets try spraying then with coppercoat. It will aid in preventing leaking. Do the header have the #1 cylinder with the slip fit joint?
So you have the emmisions on the car? An improperly sealing check valve will make an exhaust leak sound? Are the rockers on properly? Beveled lip up to seat the lock nut? Those rockers will work with the old fashion oil deflectors, so you can run the engine with the vavle cover off and not spray oil everywhere. Helpful when looking for this type of noise. http://www.jegs.com/i/Mr.+Gasket/720/1015/10002/-1 |

Honestly, the flange could have warped, I really didn't check it when I swapped the gasket, stupid me. :-x The headers are pacesetters so no slip fit on the #1 primary, no emissions what so ever on the car, the AIR bungs on the headers are plugged. Rockers are on correctly, the only thing that worries me is the amount of pre load I put on them. I am running LS7 lifters and the amount of preload that is recomended varies from an 1/8 turn to 3/4 turn. So my absolute worry would be since I run 3/4 turn, I got a PTV issue at WOT and dinged a valve... I really don't know with this car... |

I think 3/4 turn for the LS7s is too tight. I had best luck with 1/4 turn.
|
Yea, I saw your reply on tech... the pro mags drove me crazy when I had em at 1/4 so I tightened things up and they quieted down a lot.
I will start the process this evening if the rain holds off, I don't mind the cracked out sewing machine that pro mags make, but the odd pinging is bothering me. |
OK, my guess is you have way too much lash.
I'd put the pushrods and run them across a peice of glass/missor (something real flat) and make 100% sure they are all straight. Then reset the lash. I would go 1/3, that seems to be were most people are happy with them from what I've read. I honestly don't have any personal experience with them. I've always used the comp Typr R's where an 1/8 is all you need. Take the rocker to 0 lash, go 1/4, turn down the lock, then turn the nut+lock together another 1/8 so your locked in at a 1/3. See if that helps, the promags are slightly noisey. I won't doubt very highly that your valves are hitting the pistons unless you have a true monster cam or the block decked. If I recall your running a stock block, so your piston is siting at least -15 in the holes. Even with milled heads and .029 gackets you could go in the 630 lift range before you would need to start worrying about PTV. As far as an exhaust leak: With the engine running take a strip of paper and move it around the exhaust, see if any exhaust pressure blows it. It's pretty common to blow out the ends of the exhaust gaskets, the felpro are a bit thin on the ends ( why coppercoat will help ). Leaks in the center two are often from a warped flange. |
Ok, thats kinda what I am hoping, I just pulled all the plugs and alternator. I will try and do the lash later tonight.
Hopefully the flange is not warped, but if it is, well LPPs are only 475... ... |
I should add that duration affects PTV clearance much more than lift.
