Muffler Question.
I am looking for suggestions for a new muffler, stock location on a 95 LT1 car. However, I do not like the tips look, so a single 3inch in/out muffler is what I am looking for.
I would like it to be stainless, but its not required. Looking for something that flows well, and has a decent growl to it, but nothing extreme sound wise. If you have a suggestion please post it up, as it is not 4th gen specific hopefully I can get more varied responses. |
I really like the Dynomax Ultra Flo Welded mufflers.

Ok, just thought of another question, dependent on size, I was thinking I could stick the muffler under the car, rear seat area.
Now, is there a way to find the best placement of the muffler? If I could get the size to fit without issue, a straight in/out muffler there would require a little less fab work. So just curious. Thanks again. |

i would stick to the stock location, with maybe the smaller muffler back there, the weight of a couple feet of pipe isnt really worth destroying whatever ground clearance you have left

ah,my bad guys,by under rear seat I meant in series, still being dumped out back, like a LM system.
Bill, do you run a single or dual muffler setup? |

You had it on your LT1 car Brian?
If so, how was it sound wise? And to add more, I measured my current setup, its roughly 20 inches, does it matter if I get a smaller dynomax muffler? Like the 17221, with an overall length of 19 and muffler length of 14, I know the site says their mufflers will support up to 2000hp, but why the differing sizes then? |
You might want to stop by a speed shop (if they still exist) or even check out one of the car parts places to look at the mufflers in person. The UltraFlo is a straight through just like a lot of the mufflers so they won't rob any power. The Random Tech I had on my 2000 SS was also a straight through and pretty mellow at cruise speeds but got loud at WOT. I had Hooker Aerochamber mufflers on my 68 and they were also straight through and were mellow at cruise speeds. They were kind of heavy though. Generally speaking, the shorter muffler case the louder it will most likely be. And a lot of the short turbo style mufflers are not straight through.

remember that running a bullet will disqualify you from running on muffled street nights where as a canister style muffler will not (like the pypes M-80)

Just curious as to whether the larger muffler is worth the price jump? http://www.jegs.com/i/Dynomax/289/17221/10002/-1 This is the one I am looking at, and a $25 rebate too! w00tz |
If you order through Advance auto it's 119.99. They always have a 20% off code. Free shipping over $75 and Dynomax has a $25 rebate until 8/31. So, that's like $71 dollars to your door for an all stainless muffler. Not bad if you ask me.
http://shop.advanceautoparts.com/web...i_sku=18290897 Edit: I was looking at something closer to stock size. I see you're looking at something smaller. |
Sweeeeeeeet, I gotta ask em to order me one next time I go into work. :)
And I am not really sure what size I should get, like I said, its around 20 inches as the current muffler size, so I don't know how bad dropping down to the smaller muffler will be on sound levels. |
95z28
I have a 95 z and I put on a American Thunder catback exhaust 3" came with stainless steel slash cut tips around 429.00 from Summit Racing and I had cartek in whitehouse station on rt 22 do the install for around $120 sounds awesome and fits in perfectly with no mods needed!

Flowmasters for 4th gens are one of the worst flowing mufflers one can stick on em. Sorry to say. :|
And I do not need a full system just a muffler, but thanks for the suggestion! |

Well its that or the next size up, which is 120 bucks compared to 75...
http://www.jegs.com/i/Dynomax/289/17233/10002/-1 Not sure why the huge price jump. Their camaro muffler is a 24inch over all, and 20 inch body, so I guess some where around there size wise? Maybe I will call em tmmr and ask for their opinion. |
Jeff, all the Dynomax Ultra-Flow mufflers are straight through:

I's suggest looking into spintec mufflers, they make all types of sizes and different DB levels.
http://www.spintechmufflers.com/mufflers/cat_12.html I run the 4" Mufflex set up with the Spintec single out. It's not too loud below 3,000RPMS, much quiter then a LM and no raspy noises in the car. A 3" setup would probably be about the same. |
The spintech mufflers don't really say much towards what Hp it will support etc, guess I can call them up as well. Any muffler in particular I should ask about?
? |
I like my Edlebrock SDT.
