Zonda R vs. Porsche 956
 

I'm suprised no one has brought this up since the record was smashed. Recently the Pagani Zonda R smashed the record held by the insane Ferrari 599XX. It posted a time of 6:48, to put that in perspective, thats 34 seconds faster then the ZR1. As much as this time is incredible, the overall time is still held by a full blown racing car, a 956, and driven by the crazy german himself, the late Stephon Bellof, with a time of 6:11!!! thats still 37 seconds faster then the Zonda, but realistically, in the last decade, the time for production cars have been tumbling, and to be almost a half a minute to the record is incredible

Zonda built that car in memory to the old Group C / GT1 days of Le Mans racing, and IMO they hit the nail on the head. I can only imagine what the car would do on full racing slicks.
The Zonda has 100 more HP, but it is also 600lbs heavier.
I don't know which car I would want more, a ground effects, turbo charged, fiberglass rocket that would rip the edge of your lips if you try to smile while accelerating, or the dream-esqu lines, and monumental looks and performance of a road legal Group C car.

So whats your pick guys, Porsche 956, or Pagani Zonda R?

imo regardless of what the zonda is made of it just looks heavy:-? not saying i wouldnt want it, it just does. i was reading abt this story the other day, it amazing how much production cars have advanced and race cars havent...?

anyway, i guess it's like people's tastes in the lamborghini Gallardo v Murcielago. <3 the edginess and smallnes of the Gallardo. Most people hate it.

i agree with you, all lambos are sexy. i couldnt tell you the best looking car ever theres so many.

Lambos are overpriced, and thats why they sell. You were king in the 80's if oyu owned a countach, though the cost to maintain them were so outragious, its a no wonder why you see alot of them with decently low mileage. today is no different, almost half a million dollars gets you the top of the line Lambo, but they come with additional price tags, and dont even think twice of skipping a procedure, especially the insane bill for the timing belt change, since they have to take the engine out of the car.
My biggest deal is they are fire prone. Sooooo many have I seen just roasting on the side of the road. the new Ferrari 458 is doing the same thing, though Ferrari cant use the same excuse that lamborghini uses, which is people let the lambo sit for months ata time and not drive it, adn the fuel hoses dry out and crack and leak, causing the fires. ferrari just poorly designed somethign and now were at I think 3 now for crispy 458's

Another car that just came into the lime light that I love is the Ferrari P4/5 Race Car that Mr. Glickenhaus is building. I was at Monterey's air port last year waiting for my plane. Mr glickenhaus was on the same flight with us since he lives in NY. I overheard him talking to a couple people and he mentioned he wanted to make a race car out of it, and the design was still being worked out, though I didn't know what he was talkign about at the time, it has now pieced together, and he's making a race version of his sexy P4/5 Pinnifarina bodied Enzo.

If you dont know who this guy is, and I don't expect many of you to, this guy is loaded, and loves vintage cars. he owns an original Ford GT40 MkVI, and drives it on the road!!!! Only 12 of them were made, and incorporated the first ever honey comb monocoque chassis. He has a few other cars up his sleeve, and also owns the only remaining Ferrari 330 P4.

There was only 3 made, with one converted to Can Am specs, but wasent succesful. This car was dismantled, and tossed in the dumpster at Ferrari ( back in the day when a race car was obsolete, it was worth as much as a 1 ton paper weight to them) someone fished all the parts out, and reconstructed the car. Since Ferrari scratched the chassis number off its roster as cars that are still around, they don't recognize it as a true 330P4, even though several enthusiests, and proffesional inspectors say its the real deal. Even so the car is worth reportedly 10-15 million, or more given the right owner enthusiest......so much for that paper weight price :D

I leave for Monterey next week, and I will be taking tons of pics since this may be our last year to host the vintage festival. I get to meet Dan Gurney, and my good friend Mr. Prisbee, his Wife, and his Ferrari 312PB. I couldn't drive the car if I got the chance, my feet don't fiti n the well where the pedals are....AND the well has alreadybeen dropped!

Oh and BTW, I realized I'd take the Porsche 956......but last time I sat in one I had to bend my head, so they have to put a Gurney Bubble in it for my head, or we have to drop the floor a little. don't matter anyway, they have to cut the front of the body since my feet would stick out of the car. the pedals are in front of the centerline for ht efront wheels so god forbid you hit a wall hard enough.

I'm sure everyone would just rather have a Camaro! With all the left over money you could make it sooooooooooooo fast, it's gonna go ZZZOMMMMMMMMMMG, and squash the Zonda in any test.

There's too much electronics in that car. Thats another reason why I choose the 956, you can take the shifter through the gears yourself. Hell if Ferrari puts anymore electronics on it, it'll drive itself around the track, but I do understand why, since all these yuppies wiht too much money and not enough common sense to take a driving school wrap these around trees, I said it before, and I will say it again, Ferrari hasent made a true ferrari since 1974. you can say 288GTO, F40, F50, 512TR, 355, etc, but sorry the Daytona was the last crowning achievment for a road car by Ferrari. 4.4Litre boxer 12, Front engine drove, coupe body style, no wonder why they can fetch almost up to 1,000,000 in mint condition!

The last Ferrari that I can accept as truely being performance built and with quality is the 355GTS, even Jeremy clarkson still talks about how much he loved his, and how perfect it was.

almost looks like there is more in the car. i love how he was tightening his seat belts down on the back strait.

You'd be amazed at how much slack can accumulate after all that stopping from the initial belt pull from the crew. Happen to me in the McLaren in the first turn! and racing school, after a couple laps, you'd feel more movement.

wow never knew that. is it from the belt loosening from the clasp. or the material actually stretching?

yeah, the initial pull they give when your crew tightens down is a downward force applied to the belt, but when forward force is applied, it stretches the belts a little more giving you some slack. Even though that straight is long, its bumpy, so he wanted to bunker himself down a little more so he wasent getting thrown up and down insaide
