Emmisions Question

Humor me this.

OBD1 car, so sniff test... LT1 engine with a cam on a 107LSA, longtubes, and what not...

Lets say it was tuned to emit as little as possible, two cats were installed, and all emissions equipment was tuned out. ( not that it matters)

Would I be able to pass a legit sniff test? Actual visual check I know I "fail" in this scenario, so other than that.

And also, is there any way to test this without having a big fail sticker slapped on? I think most shops are required to log machine use?

as long as you can get those tailpipe readings down low, should be able to get it through in that aspect. old system was capable of emissions testing without being in an actual test, i believe the new setup can as well.

Ok, that is good news, I just am stuck on whether I should gamble and spend the money to get cats, and a new Y pipe made up in hopes of passing.

The other extreme is throwing a stock cam and exhaust manifolds back on.

or buy a 96-97 body with computer and harness and play that game

when you due?

LTb1ow 11-19-2010 01:19 PM

Not really concerned with it in NJ, but I may have to register it in MD which means inspection.

Still just thinking out loud. Another extreme would be to borrow your old motor, swap in stock motor/trans/PCM and play that game.

i would first see what you are dealing with coming out of the tailpipe then see how feasible it is to get the current setup to pass. since the air pump is only used during initial start and the egr is no longer "needed" you may be able to get it close on a craptastic tune

Featherburner 11-19-2010 02:25 PM

Matt, what car are you going to need inspected?

Pampered-Z 11-19-2010 05:31 PM

What are the other specs of the cam, long duration can also hurt emmisions.

without an EGR you will fail for NOX

And with that overlap it is gonna be dirty at idle no matter what you do.

your moving to MD... whose gonna smash NJ...

No, the parents are, ill explain tmmr at fridays if ya show.I gotta stay a nj resident until I graduate.

But basically, that cam won't pass,I kinda figured as much. Gotta explore other options

just go to some shop in the middle of the ghetto and have em stick the sniffer in a pontiac vibe...

back in the day yes. nj stopped testing for nox.

BigAls87Z28 11-20-2010 02:05 PM

This isnt going to be tested in NJ I thought. He's saying MD, Pal

sweetbmxrider 11-20-2010 04:33 PM

being that california is the most strict, CARB, and new jersey is probably next in line, i say that maryland won't give a ****. have no personal experience with their testing though.
