ecotec intake question
can the intakes be flipped around so the TB is facing the opposite way?

are you talking about the intake manifold....if i remember right from my ion (been awhile since i was underhood) the throttle body is mounted upright in them, if you flipped the manifold the tb would be upside down

oh i didn't mean flip like a rotisserie, i meant if A is where the throttle body is facing stock. B is the opposite/back end of the engine, if i could, rotate it so A lines up with B.

No you can't, The only thing you can do is change which side the air intake plumbing can be routed which would be passenger or drivers side..

great article! thanks a lot. i plan on doing an LSJ swap and i see the air intake is on the back of the supercharger. i was hoping i wouldn't need an air intake with lots of bends but i suppose we'll see.

does anyone know if there are other roots superchargers that have the air intake on the top of it rather than the rear? i'd have to take measurements but it looks like the back of the supercharger/air intake opening would go into the firewall.

The Air intake goes to the drivers side with the s.c. ecotec's..
On newer N.A. ecotecs it goes to the passenger side on newer models.. But if you look at older sunbirds and cav's they are on the drivers side for certain years.. Like I said previously the intake still face forward but the intake plumbing on certain years just routes to different sides.. The super charger intake goes to the drives side because the engine faces the passenger side so the belts are on the passenger side to turn the super charger.. The turbo intake manifolds are the same position as the N.A. 2.0,2.2, 2.4 Intakes Only difference is some are nylon like the LS engines and the turbo intake manifolds like in the Saab's are aluminum.. Dunno if the new Cobalt SS turbo intakes are aluminum.. But I know all of the intakes are interchangeable between 2.0,2.2 & 2.4 The Super Charger on ecotec's is an Eaton M62 Super charger.. |

hmm i see, well looking at the engine the supercharger goes past the end of the block, i wonder if something like this can be fabbed

see i think it would either go into the firewall, if not the air intake would either -take a hairpin turn (which wouldnt do well for air) - go south and be next to the engine all hot - cant really go to the drivers side too far bc of the proportioning valve/master cylinde. someone has swapped an ecotec in an S10 but isnt running the supercharger. |
cut and weld... may be costly, but seems to be enough material to work with
also do you already have the S/C motor? if not, id recommend a turbo 2.0 ecotec |

i had a sky redline with the 2.0 turbo, i did an the GM stage II turbo upgrade which brought it up to 290hp/325tq. I also added an aftermarket intercooler, hard IC piping, gmpp intake and catback which added at least another 30-40 hp. So figure i had a solid 325hp at the motor and at least 340tq. Fuel economy was still in the high 20s Only issue is youd still need the complete direct injection fuel system. The fact the turbos were better is why the later Cobalt SS's were switched to turbo and no longer supercharged. |
also heres someone who modified the intake snout area. basically youd just need a 90degree bend put in then use another 90 degree elbow like the ls1 intake versions and have the TB facing forward

as much as i'd like to do the supercharger i think i keep going more towards the turbo. i wouldnt have to worry about the intake, more power for about the same fuel economy. i'm not looking for something to blow off doors, something like 230-250 rwhp would be good enough for me. ( i know i'll prob want more later)

If you could find a turbo motor from a Solstice it might work a lot easier. Plus, the turbo engine will be a lot easier to modify ane build up power compared to the supercharged engine.

yeah i think thats what i'll search for as my number 1 choice.
if i dont find that then the LE5 out of the solstice if i dont find that LSJ if i dont find that, some ecotec i can score, swap it in as is, then down the road boost it. |
also remember the turbo ecotecs came in the:
solstice gxp, SKY redline, the later Coblat SS, and HHR SS. All except some 2009/2010 models can easily accept the 290hp GM turbo upgrade(sensors and GM tune) the gxp/redline are already rwd setup so thats a plus. and companies like Hahn Racecraft sells turbo kits for the 2.4l ecotecs out of the n/a solstice/SKYs |
hmm and these are fairly new vehicles, i can only hope to find one in a junkyard. well i still have some time before i actually do it, still doing lots of research + getting money
