Incredibly Stupid
This may sound so stupid, but I had to add a quart of oil to my ls1 and got lazy and poked an average size hole in the top of the oil to pour it..then a small piece got sucked into the funnel and down into the motor...does anyone know what I should do. I was leaning towards not running the motor and draining the oil then trying to flush it out with 7-8 quarts.

you mean the foil? It's probably still sitting there, pull the valve cover off.

yeah the foil...I'm pretty sure its sitting at the bottom of the motor

It's prob covered in oil. Just remove the cover which is easy and get it.

does anyone know of a DIY on removing the cover? I'm new to the ls1 scene...otherwise I'm going to have to take my chances trying to flush it out through the pan.

Hypothetically, and i under no circumstances am telling you to do this. What would be the worst thing that could happen if he left it in there?

i guess it could get in a bearing if it is small enough, or if it is large enough clog an oil passage or block part of the oil pump pickup. pretty much wherever oil goes i guess it could cause problem. unless the filter gets it 1st. it's a crap shoot.

I've been spending a lot of time under my LS1's valve covers lately, and it's very likely the piece of debris is hung up against the #2 valvesprings waiting for you to come in and get it.
Before doing anything: blow off the top of the engine and the area around the valve cover with compressed air. Get all the small dirt and grit away from the area you're opening. Disconnect battery, gently remove plug wires from the 4 coils, disconnect the coil pack harness, unbolt the coil pack, unbolt the valve cover, you're off to the races. |
Again. just pull the valve cover and look for it.
The geometry of the head castings has the valve spring seats raised from where oil drains back to the pan, so its very unlikely it would get stuck in the valvetrain. If it did drain down to the pan, it should get stuck to the mesh screen on the end of the oil pick up tube. |
Oil bottles still have foil on them? Alll I have seen in the past ten years or so haven't...
