Inspection question
Well I "might" be moving back to NJ early next year....so what's up with inspections now? Can private shops do them or is it inspection station only? I haven't lived in NJ for 10yrs or so. The GTA is gonna have one hell of a time passing.
Thanks guys. |
Any shop can do them, but the new standards have caused a lot of shops to say F it to testing pre OBD2 cars, so you may get stuck with the state place.
Why not keep it registered in PA and achieve winning status? |
I won't be able to, thought about it but can't do it. This all hinges on a job offer that might be coming in the next few days so it might be a moot point.
|
moot. lulz
But, that being said, its NJ, you can find a sticker ;) |
Yup, true. ;)
|
If it's not your DD, just register it as a Collector Vehicle and achieve winning status as well. :)
|
Doesn't it still have to pass the first time it's inspected/registered? I know in PA that's the case in order to be emissions exempt.

I realize that, read my post again. ;). In PA when you register a car that's new to you you HAVE to have it inspected regardless if you put 25K miles or 2K miles a year on it. The next year's inspection will then be emissions exempt based on miles.
I would assume NJ is the same. |

The idea of it was it's so few miles they don't care what your emission levels are, as long as it was safe (brakes, tires...) it was OK. |
That works then, thank you. :)
I'll pull up DMV's site to find some more info. |
they changed the collector car status here tho. it used to be so easy but now they want documents stating its a collectors car. i registered mine as collector just before this mess. all they cared about was the odometer working. at the time my car was primer and looked like crap, he gave some weird looks but i still got it :) the re-inspection is simply an odometer check to make sure you didnt put more than 3k miles on it a year.

I don't have that triangle sticker either. |
Thanks bitch. :) Get me some coffee while you're at it. :D
Ew, only 3K miles? That's beat. At least PA is 5K |
Tony, when I bought my '88 SS, I picked it up in NY. When I went to DMV to register it the first time, I did the Collector thing right away - you should still be able to do that. And if you plan on going over the miles, just disconnect the speedo connector from the trans. You'll get a VSS code, but no miles will register on the odometer. :)

There's still shops doing private inspections, if you have an idea where you would want to move, I believe there's a way to search for shops that do inspections, maybe somewhere on the NJ site. Many shops have dropped a lot of coin on inspection equipment so I'd bet some would be eager to put it to use.
Taking a performance car through a state run facility can make even the strongest of men cringe. |
