Yikes

I watched a ford explorer go airborne on the turnpike this morning. like 5 cars in front of me. Crazy. It can all go wrong so fast.

sweetbmxrider 09-15-2011 07:21 AM

Yikes indeed

I've got a ford explorer.... and they have an option similar to turbo boost on KITT ;)

Explain? How does a car go airborne on a highway? Blowout + Jersey barrier?

Yes. nj.com reports it was a 24 year old girl and she died. Based on what I saw, which was just after it started so I missed the trigger event, for some reason the vehicle made a hard left from the right or middle lane at 70+mph, which started it going airborne. it went across the lanes and bounced off the center barrier, bounced back higher in the air to the RH shoulder. It landed on the driver roof on the guardrail on then came back down on its wheels facing backwards. A violent stop. I was maybe 5-6 cars back, so maybe 1/10-2/10s mile behind. I usually stop at these things but like 10 of the cars in front of me pulled over and I knew it was bad when I drove by and saw no one in the driver seat, so I went to work.

It was like watching a Winston cup vid when the cars get up in the air, you see bottom of the car and it seems to float. Bizarre.

updated: ejected, not wearing a seatbelt. fail. why anyone does not wear a seatbelt is just insane to me. I saw the car, she very well might have lived if she wore a belt.

I don’t know if she was ejected or now down low in the car or what.

Wow. I was expecting it to be two good 'ol boys, never meanin' no harm.

That's wild though. I saw a Kia Sportage do that on the parkway in the rain once. Very messy but nobody was injured.

sweetbmxrider 09-16-2011 09:30 AM

Thats just terrible.

JL8Jeff 09-16-2011 10:14 AM

Wow, that's pretty bad. I watched somebody shoot across all 3 lanes on 95 the other day at 70+ mph to take the exit! I thought they were gonna wipe out. Without knowing if that Explorer had a mechanical failure or not, it's tough to comment about the driver/driving. But the level of bar/crazy driving is going up rapidly in this state.

Thats terrible news.

Jeff,
I believe they call that the Jersey Swipe...

SRGN 09-16-2011 03:45 PM

A 24 yr old girl in a Honda hit me a few weeks ago, was yapping on her cell phone and attempted to make a right turn into mcdonalds from the center lane while I was driving the speed limit in the right lane. How you can not see a Suburban on a clear night with no other traffic at 1am is beyond me. Suburban 1 Honda 0, I did have to use a rag to wipe silver paint off my bumper though. Her door/fender hit my bumper and tire. Window was open, and when her mirror snapped off it hit her in the face. It was like some deity just bitch slapped her for being a moron.

sweetbmxrider 09-16-2011 05:51 PM

 bitch slapped by a mirror, awesome

Jersey Sweep!

greenformula92 09-20-2011 08:23 AM

i hate to say this but explorers are know for some fairly catastrphic joint failures in the front end....ive seen more than one lose a balljoint on the left front side

but that is a shame

T69SS 09-20-2011 08:21 PM

That will get your heart racing!

SRGN 09-20-2011 11:32 PM

Keep in mind that with safety inspections no longer being performed in NJ, accidents caused by mechanical failures will most likely start to rise in the coming years.

trashman01 09-22-2011 05:31 PM

i saw a escort ramp a dear on the turn pike coming back from Etown, funniest thing i ever seen, sucks that girl died though, too young, too fast
