How to Check License Plate Availabilty?

About to put in a request for a personalized plate, but would like to check the availability of my favorite choice(s) before submitting the application--this way, if they are unavailable, I can play with the characters & find something that works and that I like.

Also, the MVC site shows the following options, but no option for "LE" text on them as I've seen before. Just curious how that works, but it's not a deal breaker.

An online database would be great right about now. I dread going to the MVC.

When I applied for QQs there was no way to do it. I had to gamble.

From what a friend told me, he did a paper application, submitted his 4 choices, then waited 3 weeks for a response back as to whether or not he got any of them.

New Jersey HAS to have a better way of doing it than that...

The top right one is the LE plate. If you just get the plate, not vanity, it comes LE XXXX. I thought there was a portion on their site that you could check availability?

Personalized license plate combinations now available are limited to a minimum of three letters and a maximum of seven characters
(letters, or letters and number). No punctuation marks or symbols, such as the silhouette of New Jersey, can be used. The plate can
accommodate seven characters or spaces and each character takes a full space. The same combination can be issued for more than
one vehicle if owned or leased by the same person, provided no more than six spaces are used in the combination. The additional sets
of plates will have a small dash number,-2,-3, etc., following the registration number (FRANK-2, JOAN-3, etc.). A separate
application and $50 fee is required for each additional set. Combinations having three letters and the numbers 1 through 20 are “courtesy
plates” and the senator of your election district must approve your request before it is submitted. The fee for a “courtesy plate” is $30.
CONSIDER YOUR CHOICES CAREFULLY! NO SUBSTITUTIONS OR REFUNDS ARE ALLOWED ONCE THE PLATES ARE
ORDERED FROM THE MANUFACTURER.
sounds lame

Ahh. Thanks, Adam. That makes sense.

I looked around a bit, but maybe I'm just too exhausted to find it?
If you find it, let me know & I'll buy you lunch next Rodeo at BLS Performance or something!

Actually, it looks like you are SOL. Seems like you just get to see how it looks on your selected plate and then the dice are rolled. That is really dumb.

a friend of mine used to run the plates for me and him when he worked dispatch... we ran dozens and dozens... apparently they never audited the records lol

Yeah, I did a search on here before I posted & heard of people doing that.
Unfortunately, I don't know anyone who works for MVC.

LS1ow 10-03-2011 08:55 PM

my LE plate reads "LE 61UE" and when you look at it quick it looks like LE BLUE

Tru2Chevy 10-03-2011 09:00 PM

I always thought it would be kinda funny to see if they would issue a personalized LE plate with the 4 characters 01NK. I wouldn't ever run it out of respect for my friends in law enforcement, but it would be funny if MVC accepted it.

That's how the DMV has been doing it for years. You write in your top four choices, and then they e-mail you back saying which one you got and how long it'll take to receive them. Been through this a few times. :) I've had personalized plates on my old Monte (two different ones), my old Impala SS, and even my DDs.

sweetbmxrider 10-04-2011 11:31 AM

Yeah, I guess they have to approve the plate anyways too.

i saw a plate on a car over the summer that was "PHQ" i'm still wondering how that made it thru lol sense you would expect that to get the axe.

sweetbmxrider 10-05-2011 07:21 AM

Could be someone's initials. I have seen 2 FML, it was his initials.

So, I finally got around to filling out the paperwork and whatnot today. Called the MVC personalized plate department and asked "How should I distinguish between a "O" and "0" in my hand-written application?"

The response I got shocked me: "You can't have a zero, or an O in your license plate."
Now, I know I've seen plates with an 0 or O in them in NJ, but maybe this is a new rule?

Oh, the person I spoke with also said that you can check availability online, after making an account. I registered for a MyMVC account today, and when I get my PIN# or ID#, I'll go through the online application instead, and see if he's correct, or just full of it.

Yes, I know that. I was just taking a precaution to see if they wanted me to do that, or if they thought that may confuse the inmates of Leesburg State Prison too much.
