My Carb doesn't want to tune -_-
Hey guys I am looking for some help tuning my carb she is running rich as hell.
I have tried tuning her but not doing so well. Seems to be a series of issues. First my idiot light for my choke has come on even though she it wired up, next I notice that the choke isn't opening when warmed up. I checked there is power going to the electric choke but it is not operational. It may have been from when I replaced the vacuum break mount. The next issue it she is running way to rich and I can't seem to tune the carb correctly. This is where I could use some help as well. Anyone in the NJ are please hit me up! PS: the car in question is in my sig. |
if you want a shop to do it check out Joey Ts in little ferry.

I was looking for something a little closer to Hillsdale.
Have you used Joey ts before and do you have their information? |
There are bunch of tuning tools to choose from. Innovate makes an LM-1 and LM-2 or you can go with a F.A.S.T. dual wide band. Install one of them and you can tune the car as often as you want and you only pay for it once, they are really easy to use. I have one in my car, so I can rejet when I change from race gas to pump gas.

Check ground on electric choke
Check all vacum lines and seal between intake and carb Check for fuel spilling into bowls while not running |
First thing to do is get the choke opening fully, it's going to run rich until that is resolved. Went through this a few of the ECM Quadrajets. Been many years, but Once the choke is coming off you get then address the A/F.

Is the electric choke self grounded? There is only one line that I have running to it and that line is hot.
This hasn't been a problem before and I am not sure what changed to make it happen. I wonder if the choke it self went bad. |

what kind of carb are we talking about? Those bi-metal springs that control the choke mechanism (the choke is a series of parts, not just one) use wear out. We used to change those a lot in q-jet cars. But hollys have the same basic part too. |
It is a qjet off of a 73 GTO 400 block, I can get the serial as well.
I had a problem with the vacuum break mount and I wonder if I put it back together incorrectly. |

finding a quality shop to work with a q-jet might be tough. |
Did 73 GM cars get an elecronic choke Q-jet? I didn't think those carbs showed up until the 80's. Get a part # off the carb and a picture of the choke setup will help us tell if it's stock or aftermarket. This is a tough one to troubleshoot without some good information so part #'s and pictures will help a lot.

I didn't even think about a divorced choke since he mentioned a wire.

There were changes to the Q-Jet during its run that may make it act wacky. An 81 TA also had the first year of the CCC system. Not sure if that plays into it too much but it may explain dash lights. Quote:

81 was CCC so he may have a CEL on, but probably not. otherwise I don't think any other light is ccc related. |
