LS1 Cam removal
Hey guy's I know someone is going to say to search this and I have... My problem is that once I get the cam past the first three lobs it stops and does not want to go any farther. I can spin it but it wont go any farther out of the block I have been messing with it for about an hour and a half now and still nothen. the motor is a bare short block no lifter's or push rods the cam moves easy till this point then stops but can still be rotated back and forth but wont come out any farther.
I have wiggled it spun it and pulled on it and nothen any pointers? Here are some pic's. http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f3...034/ls1cam.jpg http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f3...34/ls1cam2.jpg |
Had the same problem. I wish I could remember what I did, just remember when it came free it was unexpected and sent me backwards..... Think I might have used pb/wd and a little more force then I wanted to use.
Sorry couldn't help |
Yea I was thinking that this would be the easy part guess not.

one of the rear bearing journals is probably just catching. perhaps try getting a cam handle or mocking up another way of holding the cam so you can get more leverage on it, instead of just manipulating the cam itself. even maybe try putting the cam gear on it and try more.
|
Yea I'm trying everything under the sun still no luck.
|
I got it lol thanks guys had to put the cam gear back on and yank the heck out of it. I
|
The bearing probably just build up a ridge from oil and made it a little harder
|
Yea there is a little ripple in the bearing should i replace the front bearing or will it be ok?
|
not exactly sure what you mean
|
The front cam bearing doesn't look to be in the best of shape how hard is it to replace them they seem to be pressed in?

You are going to need stuff like that. If you are having any machine work on the block done a machine shop should do it for very cheap. |
I might take some pics of the bearing and post them in here to see what you guys think. Any of you engine builders out there feel free to comment thanks.

I would have to agree if its out I would replace them. If I could have replaced and wasn't on a strict time constraint I would have.
