Tire recommendation
 

What are you guys that are running 17x9.5's using size wise for tires? The wheels I'm picking up have 275 40 17's on them, and geez are they pricey. Just looking for alternate options on what will fit a 4th gen.

9.5? 275 is the min...

Is it? Okay. I'm lost when it comes to a size that will fit not only the wheel of course, but the car at stock ride height as well. Hmmm. Thanks NJT :)

I disagree with this. As an alternative, I would propose that 275 is rather the maximum. Narrower tires would likely give less grip, but the stiffer sidewall would give you better turn-in in the corners.

For what its worth, though, I run 275s on my 17x9.5 wheels.

Is my thought process correct in thinking numerically lower than 275 would be narrower? Excuse my ignorance, sometimes tire sizing makes me feel like a child lol :)

275 = mm in width


Just run 275's. Yes, they are expensive but they are somewhat of a standard size. Something funky like a 265 or 285 will be more expensive since there isn't much demand.

As per TireRack. . .

245/255 = 7.5"-9.5" - 8" measured width (which is the standard sized wheel that the tire is normally run on)

275 = 9"-11" - 9.5" measured width

Thanks guys, looks like 275's it is. Following that pattern, "40" is 40mm for sidewall height?

I believe the aspect ratio is a percentage.

275 = 275mm wide
40 = 40% of 275mm is the height of the tire
17 = rim size

No problem man. Tires are not cheap, you don't want to make a mistake. "You mount em, you bought em", etc.

and 275 mm = section width (side wall to sidewall), not tread width.

if you want... i got a set of 17x11 ZR1s painted black if you want to throw a 315 out back ;)

tirerack.com will give you the best price and don"t think u have to go pirelli or anything crazy...many manufacturers make cheaper tires under pseudym names...compare online...they have tires starting at $141/piece for that size

To clarify further, that means sidewall height, not overall height of the tires. So a 275/40/17 should have a 110mm sidewall height.

Thank you sir, lots of good info here. Along with the set of wheels I picked up, the gentleman sold me a single brand new BFG G-force T/A KD 275/40r17. Very nice tire. Just need a few more :)

Just be aware that that's a dry weather only tire ;D

Bill, I TRY not to drive in the rain, but you know how that works. Perhaps I'd be better off putting all weather tires on the front at least. Do you think they would be incredibly dangerous If I were to get caught in the rain?

it is not recommended to mix tire designs.

what you are proposing will make rain related oversteer issues even worse and yet make it push worse in the dry. so an bad deal all around

This. Buy a full set of quality tires. You will be very happy in the long run with that decision.

I run MT et street radials on the rear and just a cheapo pair of tires up front, never had an issue in the rain?

Just have to be smart about things.
