Relocating to Central NJ
 

Looking for some info...
My company is relocating to Central NJ-Jamesburg 8A off the turnpike. They want me to go with them... What areas should we aviod... I plan to buy but want to be within 30 minutes commute...concern about flood areas and insane property taxes... Currently in Vernon planning on selling (hopefully).
Moving should be in the fall but to start they will put me up in a hotel for the week...

its new jersey taxes will suck , but i dont think you have to worry to much about floods ... maybe just come down to your work area and look around see were you would like to live.

there is a juvenile jail there, i'm sure if you bought a house there, it may be hard to sell later on. area isnt bad, i'm in north brunswick, about 10 miles from there.

i know someone selling a nice 2 bedroom home on a cul-de-sac, inground pool, hardwood floors throughout in spotswood. that is about 15-20mins from jamesburg. pm and i can get you contact info. not quite sure abt the asking price but the seller is looking to sell!

oh and DRIVE THE SPEED LIMIT in helmetta, theyd pull over their own grandmother if she was going 1 over the limit

lots of places you could go in that area. My guess is they all might be more than up in the vernon area.

You want rural or sub or urban? They are all available within 30 min of jamesburg. The more north and west you go, the more sub and urban it will get. The more south and east (until you hit the shore properties) it will be more rural. Monmouth and Burlington Co. taxes are a little less than Middlessex and Mercer. I am in west monmouth myself, love the rural area, just have to watch out for deer and turkeys :)

I'm think more "suburbs" Been in Sussex CTY 20+ years now and to go anywhere you have to driver 30-45 minutes...want more choices with in a few minutes drive

I'm really thinking about an easy commute....currrently do an hour each way...really want to cut that way down...

No...kids are "adults" now....they may be moving with us at some point...more opportunities down there than up here...

My GF lives in jamesburg... during Irene anything on the Thompson park side of the rail road tracks flooded like you wouldnt believe.

Fleet, Best thing to do is to get with a realtor to see what is available in south middlesex, eastern mercer and western monmouth in your price range. Then post the places here and we can help with the details. There are so many diverse places in that area from low income housing to mcmansions. So without knowing your price point and whats available, it is hard to give advice. 4 bdrm houses are going for half a mill around me.

Going to meet up with a realtor next week to scope out some of the areas...and see if the realtor is a "fit" with us...

Did our first recon trip down there yesterday. East Windsor seemed real decent...anything we need to know about there? Also anyone know how traffic is on 33 say from Freehold area heading west towards 130 or 133 (is 133 new?) during rush hour and then back east at rushour?

133 opened about 10 years ago so you can get around hightstown. Now they are working on the east end as part fo the new NJTPK exit 8 exchange.

EW taxes seemed high based on the houses we looked at there. I don't know a lot about it but it seems ok. Rich189 lives near there.

I agree, the windsor's have a very high tax bill for this area. The Rt33 to 8a commute is really light to non-existant. But there are plenty of back roads to get around. Takes me 40 min from Millstone to Princeton via back roads. 8A is closer :)

The good news is that you are going to have A LOT of good choices... the bad news is that you are going to have A LOT of good choices. If you liked East Windsor in terms of what's around, you might also like Hamilton (a bit further south, you'd be trading a few tax dollars for 10-15 minutes of commuting). I like EW a lot, it was very similar to where my wife grew up (South Brunswick) 15 years ago. Out where Kevin lives is VERY nice, a lot of nice homes set around a lot of horse farms. You can find similar areas further south (Chesterfield, Mansfield, Allentown, etc.) and you'll find some beautiful "suburb" areas North and East of EW though be careful as some areas are changing quickly. As suggested, find a few areas that you like and I'm sure there are locals that can pipe up about the pros and cons of each area. I've lived in all four corners of this state (Medford, Absecon, Madison, Lawrenceville, Piscataway, and Mansfield) and have likes and dislikes about each area. That said, the area you areas you are looking are among my favorite in the state.

I'm thinking maybe north up to S Brunswich area....west 206 Skillman area east towards 9 Old Bridge....not sure yet...still thinking south....some where between 33 and 195 as close to the beach we can get and still be within a 30 minute commute....still weighing all my options.

Wife lived in East Brunswick years and years ago had famly there until 10 years ago so we want to be south of there.

Do what I did, take out an old fashioned map and compass and draw a circle around your work that is 30 min travel time (or what you are comfortable with). Then cut that circle in half vertically. The eastern half circle is where you need to live. The reason is if you live east of your work, you will drive to and from work with the sun on your back. If you live in the western half circle, you will always have the sun in your eyes on your commute.

I live in Monroe and it has the lowest property taxes in Middlesex County. That's where 8A is.
