Cam selection(COMP SHELF GRIND ONLY)

I need some help finding/choosing a shelf grind from comp. To make a long story short I have tons of gift cards for amazon so I can't but a tsp,tr, etc. cam. Has to be shelf grind.

I would really like a 228r so any specs around that would be awesome.

This is all I have so far

XR281HR 228/230 .571/.573 112 LSA

XER273HR 224/230 .581/.588 114 LSA

XR275HR 222/224 .566/.568112 LSA

I'm not really sure what the difference between the lobes are, besides ramp rates which I also have no clue about..

I really like this cam but I think the lift is a bit low
XR277HR 224/228 .534/.537 112 LSA

Are there any other shelf cam's I'm missing? Can I run behives on any of these? Which one would have a stock length pushrod(I already have hardened pushrods, Can I reuse them?)What gears would I need for most of these cams? Shift points?

Car is 6spd ls6 intake/exhaust/tune and MAYBE a 100-150 shot. Daily driven. Looking for most usable power here.

Are you trying to go 10's still?

WayFast84 08-07-2012 11:48 AM

I'm not sure if you are serious but with spray maybe? I just want a car that has usable power. I've had the car a year and I only made 3 passes.

Call Comp, their techs are good.

So do you just want a cam that makes funny noises? Just trying to understand what you are doing here.

I just want a cam that will give me some more power, maybe dip 11's na, while not wanting to kill myself around town with a decent gear ratio. I figure all of those cams would put me between 360-375 and close to what I want. I am seeking other people's opinions for some extra guidance so I make the right choice.

What heads?

why not use the amazon cards for a bunch of normal stuff that you needed anyway, and use cash for the cam you want?

or sell off the gift cards and use the cash for the cam you want... seems like if you settle now, it could make the car less fun for ya

WayFast84 08-08-2012 10:39 AM

Might just use it on a oil pump and spring kit. I don't need or want anything else, also comp cams are generally cheaper and sometimes they are the exact same grind. The torquer v2 is a shelf grind comp for like $25-50 more depending where you shop.

I know where want the specs to be and all of these cams are pretty close. I just need help deciding which one.

Lobe ramp rates: Less XR, XER, XFI, EPS, LSL, LSK More

Go with the comp cams XER 232/234 112lsa, basically the TV2. Power band should peak around 6200 on those crap heads, shift at 6500. It would respond well to better heads later on.

PAC beehives are only good to .600 lift, the new comp cams beehives can go higher. I would run patriot gold doubles or prc doubles on XER+ lobes for better valvatrain stability.

You need to measure pushrod length for proper preload...Aside from all the tolerance differences in stock parts, the cam lobes may have a different base circle. Throwing the 7.4" rods in is a gamble.

If you dont have the funds to do the cam, pushrods, springs, gaskets, fluids, oil pump, tune, and install/tune all at once, WAIT.

WayFast84 08-08-2012 11:53 AM

I'm doing it all at once. I think the tv2 is right on the edge of being a mild cam and a big cam for daily driving. So I assume the next lower is the 228/230 cam.

edit. Now that i think about it everyone always says they wish they went with a bigger cam. How will the tv2 do with some spray?

KirkEvil 08-08-2012 01:45 PM

The cam will be fine. Your drivetrain will not.

NJ346 08-08-2012 04:38 PM

TV2 is fine. It's what I have with LS6 heads and the car is plenty fine for DD duty with 4.11s. Probably would be fine with 3.73s or 3.90s too. The car made 408 at the wheels and gets 23mpg hwy

Im running a comp 224/224 .581 .581 116LSA cam, LS6 intake 85mm tb, longtubes, stock 317's on a 6.0 bottom end. I made 372hp/374tq through a 6 speed and a 9 inch. So with a cam close to that you should be over what Im making with higher compression.

WayFast84 08-09-2012 09:23 AM

Are your 243's milled?

thats a TSP 224R cam cut on a 116 very streetable & nice hp even with stock heads & intake, near stock idle, very close to the MTI stealth cam.

Torquer v2 cam is great. good drivebilty & power. just did a SS with V2 cam, 5.3 ported heads, stock ls1 intake and pulled like a raped ape. made just under 400rwhp @ 6400rpms

if your looking for a choppy idle (nice lope) order cam with a lsa of 112 or lower

WayFast84 08-10-2012 10:45 AM

V2 is out. Just read a whole bunch of people bitching about how annoying it gets in traffic. I'm thinking the next lower. 228/230 or the 224/230.

Jersey Mike 08-10-2012 11:14 AM

A few members on here have the V2.
I know one specifically who DDs that cam in his T56 car. With his exhaust set up (ARH to Y to chambered muffler) it drones too much on long trips or extended highway driving, for my liking. However, the car pulls like an animal.

He DDs it, however I don't think I could. It's all in personal preference. Why not reach out to some locals and test drive some cam'd cars, rather than making decisions that affect your tolerances, needs and expectations off of other people's reviews?

sweetbmxrider 08-10-2012 09:00 PM

Dude its all in the tuning. Pay someone who knows wtf they are doing and you won't have a problem. Cam surge means they didn't give a **** about you.

WayFast84 08-11-2012 11:08 AM

I still don't think I'd like driving that everyday even if it was tuned perfect. I want an all around car. Power everywhere. I think I'm going with a 228 cam on an xer or eps lobe. I can wait a bit. The gift cards are enough to buy me other stuff for the car that I know I NEED.
