Which intake manifold for a 350 swap.
Hi, I am looking at swapping a GM Goodwrench 350 longblock p/n 10076353 into my 84 T/A to replace the stock 305 (LG4).
I plan on reusing my stock ccQ-Jet, aircleaner & factory cowl induction, and EGR setup. My LG4 intake was warped in the past and the water neck bolts have been helicoiled, so it would be best to go for a new intake. I plan on running a fairly mild set up so I am just looking for something that can directly replace my LG4 intake and keep the stock hood clearances. I am looking at the GMPP ZZ4 (#10185063) intake manifold and the Edelbrock Performer (#3701). Will these two give the me OEM clearances i am looking for? Thanks for any assistance. |
It has been a LONG while since since I had my 87 bird but when I swapped a 350 in and wanted to keep the stock hood I used a Wieand Stealth manifold with edelbrock carb and topped it with a edelbrock pro-flo air cleaner otherwise it wouldn't clear. I like the stealth because at the time my mild 350 was running a 272 cam, flat top pistons and a 64c head and the rpm power range was low.
This is just my opinion of course and it was a long time ago there maybe better options now. |
Gmpps manifolds are made by edelbrock iirc, just with a bowtie casting mark.

Well I asked this question on Edelbrocks Facebook page and received the following reply:
"If there is any difference in height it will be minimal within 1/4"." So I think I should be OK going with the Performer... Unfortunately I only have about 1/4-1/2" to play with before my aircleaner will hit my the bottom of my Strut tower bar... So I guess I'll still need to track down those dimensions. D'oh! |
I never had any issues running any performer/torquer manifolds on 3rd gens. Only issues I ran into was with air gaps and single planes like the victor jr.

If its a minimal amount, would it hurt to shave the bottom of the strut tower to give you a hair of room if need be. Or shim where the bar mounts with a washer

Thanks for the feedback everyone, I think I'll go with an OEM LG4 or L69 manifold rather than risk any interference. The STB just makes such a nice difference in handling that I'd hate to have to get rid of it.
LT1 8U, the STB has already been trimmed a bit to clear the air cleaner and if I went any higher it would be hitting the hood. |
I take it that you are using a drop base air cleaner already?

Get the aftermarket intake and mill the carb pad if it's too much?

Performer should fit - had one on my camaro until i went with the RPM version (with a taller hood).

I e-mailed both Edelbrock and Summitt about their intakes. According to Edelbrock the Performer should be within 1/4" of an inch of the stock intake manifold height. Summitt says that their SUM-226008 is exactly the same dimensions as OEM, so I think I'll give the Summit intake a try. Thanks for all the feedback everyone.
