Wondering if I can borrow it from someone so I dont have to buy it

WildBillyT 05-29-2013 07:15 PM

Have one that is similar.

PolarBear 05-29-2013 08:10 PM

Work well? Can borrow? Need soon, if possible for the weekend

WildBillyT 05-29-2013 08:41 PM

Yea. I should be at my parents on Sat refinishing some metal cabinets. Do you need it before then?

BonzoHansen 05-29-2013 10:42 PM

A bushing or a bearing?

V 05-29-2013 10:54 PM

I"m not really local, but I have a 3 point bearing puller. I used it to pull the pilot bearing on my V(ls6/t56). At first the 3 prongs didn't fit in, but after some slight grinding it fit great and worked like a charm.

I had typed out a response on the computer, but it's not here. Let me know if you would be able to meet before then. I am not in Newark tomorrow or Friday so I should be able to come by almost anytime

It is a bearing, but that shouldn't really matter, right?

PolarBear 05-29-2013 11:02 PM

Thanks Paul, I'll let you know if it doesn't work out with WBT. This while deal is going to hold me up until I get this out. I can't put the trans up to the engine with it in there, but I just remembered I can put it on my mockup block for the mockup purposes that will hold me until I get this out. I'd rather just use the real engine since the mockup block is so light and is already off balance trying to get it in the car

I think I know why you asked now. Can't use the bolt trick with an LS based engine. Crank is basically gun drilled with a plug in the back for oil control. Hydraulicing or the bolt trick will push out the plug

creeper 05-30-2013 06:26 AM

I always just rent the blind hole puller from Autozone, works very well and is free

just another option

Slide hammer type?

sweetbmxrider 05-30-2013 07:10 AM

F all that nonsense. Throw some grease in the hole and hit something that fits inside the bushing with a hammer. Hydraulic pressure will push that ****er right out #BigPal #GoneButNotForgotten

The_Bishop 05-30-2013 08:44 AM

Or it will knock the plug in the bottom of the pilot hole into the crankcase.

That's actually the one I own.

You can use a slide hammer but I was OK with an old wrench and a hammer.

If you want to meet up tomorrow I am around west NJ. Research moved to NYC and I'm not on the go. Might be easier to just get it from the 'zone though.

If your car is purple, sure that will happen. Did it on the lemon and all the success was had. We used a deep socket or a brass punch, can't remember that far back.

The_Bishop 05-30-2013 10:23 AM

 Just lucky, then?

Oh, I actually want the non-slide hammer one. I have had terrible luck breaking those, multiple times. I really want the press style one

Featherburner 05-30-2013 11:04 AM

Bear, what size is the hole in the bearing?

Google it, all the old timers do it. Kinda surprised no one here mentioned it. Guess these boys like them fancy toys 8-)

I used the puller on the last engine. Before that I'd just pack it with grease and sand a wooden dowel down to hammer in the bushing hole.

The_Bishop 05-30-2013 11:37 AM

BMX, I know about that trick, I've done it myself a few times. The stock LS crank pilot hole is drilled all the way through, though, and has a welch plug in the bottom of the hole, whereas the older iron didn't. I would think you'd have a good chance of knocking that plug in using the grease/hydraulic method.

Looks like this:

What ever the standard input shaft is. GM didnt change it with the LS stuff, just the bearing I bought sits in the larger section like Bishop posted. Now that I am changing transmissions it is too far out so I can use a regular ole' $1 bronze bushing now. Have a few new ones lying around the house.

I have read on more than one occasion that people have pushed the plug in with the LS based engines
