Warming your car in the cold is bad
I've also heard driving your car wastes fuel. It's smarter to tow it places and save on gas.
Block heater ftw
But otherwise, thats a face palm |
no sitting and idling for me, as soon as it fires, im off.
that article is comical though. |
I think there is a lot of truth there. But i think that is less of an issue with efi. Carbs will wash the cylinders down especially if the choke is problematic, causing oil dilution and accelerated wear. That is why cylinders in newer engines often still look good with piles of miles on them. But i think engines warm up faster under load and thus lean out sooner than an engine just idling. I guess that is his point.
I warm it up so the insde is warm when i get in :) |
I think the ambient temp plays a big role here. Fluids do behave differently in cold and extreme cold. Hell, tcc lock up is disabled till a certain temp. I'm not one to wait for heat but I don't turn the key and slam the gas either. I don't see an issue with idling. Very few people keep a car long enough to have an issue with cylinder wear. I remember when we were living in that polar vortex nonsense. Trans in gear and transfer case in neutral, really helped with the trans cooperating with my gear choices. 3rd pedal ftw!
I usually give my cars 30 seconds or so worth of idle time and drive softly until the temps come up. Seems to work fine for me.
X2, start the car, adjust the music, heater controls, put on gloves and that is long enough. If it is really cold out I give it another minute :)
TIL letting a car run is bad.
I can understand not beating on the car till its warm, but really? Cmon now, like Bonzo said we're not on carbs anymore. |
Rotary engines need to warm up prior to driving if you wish to prolong its life.
No one cares about rotaries.

its funny that the guy mentioned in the article is a drag racer. i don't know to many drag racers that don't do some sort of warm up process, even in the warmer months
It bothers me that no one mentions the fluids in the trans and diff getting up to temp as part of the warming up procedure. I wait for my idle to settle a bit and then I take off gently. There's other moving parts to a car other than the engine!
I wait for my seat heaters to get warm.

I think the starter motor has stopped before my truck is in gear and moving.
I didn't let my snowblower get up to temp before blowing snow.

Trucks been plugged in since this morning's drive. Still takes forever to get warm enough to blow hot air.
I left the jeep in 4wd when parked so I had less time to wait to conquer!
