What would be better...

To have the transmission shop do my axle swap (extimated 5-600 dollars), or have it delivered to the shop, pick it up with a truck (i can use a friends since itll be local), have a few of you who know what you're doing (i have some names thought of already) come over and install it/feed you all.

Input? Suggestions?

Axle or rear end swap?

j0n 02-18-2005 07:23 AM

axle-swaps are easy

rear-end swaps are even easier...dont pay anyone 500 bucks for either

Tru2Chevy 02-18-2005 09:07 AM

I'd be willing to lend a hand for a good meal :)

axle swaps are easy...if its the posi then that can be a little more difficult, one way or the other 500-600 seems very pricey if thats what you were quoted.

Savage_Messiah 02-18-2005 09:22 AM

It's the entire axle, from disc to disc

Looking good, I may take some of you up on this offer :)

foff667 02-18-2005 09:38 AM

it took craig and a handful of friends like 2 or so hours to swap in a new rear axle...im sure we can set something up.

For clarification, you might want to say you are swapping the rear end, because people will think you are only swapping one axle.

ya it doesnt take long at all to swap out a rear just depends on how rusty everything is.

Savage_Messiah 02-18-2005 01:16 PM

Jus for clarifications sake who has done it before? Just to see whos done it I already have a sense of the mechanical inclination of most of you :P

And just to clarify, I am swapping the entire rear end

Oh and the one possible catch could be my lack of all but simple tools

foff667 02-18-2005 01:33 PM

well craig, justin, tim, and i think phil if i remember correctly took the greater part in the rear swap...i stopped by for a little bit and tried helping with the TQ arm but there were just too many hands so for the most part i stayed out of the way...but tim and I swapped my posi out in my truck so ive dabbled in rear end stuff.

Tru2Chevy 02-18-2005 02:19 PM

Yea, I helped swap the carrier, and then later the whole rear in Little G's car. I'm also waiting for a nice day to swap the 3.23 posi into my car.

JerzLT1 02-18-2005 02:45 PM

Savage_Messiah 02-18-2005 05:10 PM

So, if we were to do this, who would be in?

Little G 02-18-2005 05:23 PM

I could lend a hand depending on when you do it.

Mike 02-18-2005 05:33 PM

Isn't that E-town opening day?

Savage_Messiah 02-18-2005 07:49 PM

goddamnit, my dad keeps saying, "well id rather you have the shop do it so you now it's done right, he said bring the car in monay he'll work on it tuesday, and this way it'll be done." I said to him, "well I don't have 5-600 bucks, i have more like 200, do you have that extra 3-400 to spare me" and he says no, so I say "so either way it'll be out for a few weeks."

Just now he calls, I tell him good news we'll do it at home, he starts saying all this "well then you depend on someone and then they can't make it and this turns into a 3 week, then a 2 month project." says he'll front me the money, I'm real close to saying if you want the shop to do it then you pay for it. He also keeps saying things like "oh well how do you know how to do this and that, I can say I know how to do somethign that doesn't mean I know how to." Bunch of ********, but idk. He keeps getting all crazy about all the little things that he thinks could go wrong, even tho he hasn't had a camaro since his 69 SS and hasnt had a muscle/sports car in at LEAST 20 yrs or so.

I'll post whatever the end result is, I guess.
