To setup the security go into the router settings and enable WEP. The way you get into most routers is through a web browser. Usually something like http://192.168.0.1 then log-in default as admin password admin. Don't worry about the admin password, just make certain the remote admin is disabled (it is by default). Go to where you can enable WEP and give it a 5 character "key". Once that's done you'll be asked by windows to enter the "key" and now it's secure.
Don't bother with a 5 character WEP...if someone is smart enough to go looking for open wireless network, chances are they have access to some simple hack tools. Go for the 128 bit encryption (26 hex characters), and make it random.
