Ideally you want to cross the line at the very top of the gear that is 1:1, which in his case is 4th, so he is right on. After that the overdrive gears kill your acceleration. I agree a stocker sounds better and I could drive a golf cart into teh 11's with 4.56's, butt still for bolt ons and gears, not too shabby.....for a stang.
That 1:1 gear thing is too simplistic and generally incorrect. The fastest way down a 1/4 mile with an automatic or SUPERMAN shifting is with the most gears before the shifting time becomes detromental. Example, if I had a 0 time between shifts and a .5 overdrive and had the horsepower to trap 120mph then I'd want some crazy high gears in the rear to let me use all my gears. With more gears you can keep the engine closest to it's peak power. Ideally we'd all have CVT's that kept our engines at the RPM that makes enough horsepower with traction.
I've broken down gear selection to a science, it's what I do with just about everything related to cars .
