GM determined in testing that a balsa core with a fiber shell is much safer in an accident. the fiber bonds itself to the wood and when impacted will cracked and remain in big pieces in an accident, where as the CF alone will turn into small shards and a dust that is very dangerous when inhailed.
when i first heard balsa as a floor structure i though WTF? then i looked into it and it really makes sense.
