Edit: I didn't see the link earlier, but I have also heard this from a different source. It doesn't seem that their is an official source for this info, but then again Pershing was high up the ladder and may have just gotten away with this.
When the U.S. army fought muslim moros in the phillipines they coated their bullets with pork fat. They would also cremate casualties (no-no for Islam, I think) while pointed opposite of the city of Mecca. Gen. John "Black Jack" Pershing saw that taking heaven away removed the enemies will to fight.
Should we do this? Hell no. Especially not with the media that we have today. Just because it works doesn't mean we should do it. We don't coat everything in napalm or use nuclear devices or germ warfare, but they work.
