I was watching either american hot rod or automaniac when they talked about it..

theirs a family of car guys by my work that have cars in their back yard their gonna restore, restored gmc verisons of the elcamino in the front, a blue firebird vert and a hot rod their workin on now.
When our boys got back from WWII the price of new cars was very high, so they would buy older cars and modify them- the birth of hot rodding. Paint was a "nice to have" compared to a car that ran. The whole "Rat Rod" thing happening now is like a day 2 resto, you go with color schemes, parts, and such that are period correct. Some Rat Rod clubs won't even allow ANY nonwearable parts on their cars that was created after the car's build year.
