If prepped properly and cleaned VERY well, spray cans can do an excellent job. If I was painting the engine compartment black, i would probably have used a can, but i wanted a matching, finished look with the pewter so in that case, a HVLP gun was almost the only option.

Try just cleaning everything and it may look tons better just doing that. One piece of advice, if you start taking things out to clean, take GOOD pictures first of everything so when you have to put stuff back together, you can refer to the pics to see where everything goes.


oh btw, these were my costs for painting my engine compartment...
compressor 240(50% off reg)
gun 100
paint and masking supplies/tape etc 200
wiring/parts to install compressor ~350(1000 if professionally done)
air hose, regulator, drier, misc fittings, respirator ~110

thats a cost of at least 1000, but now i have all the stuff needed and it'll be cheaper next time i wanna do anything, Plus i have a need for a compressor and airtools much greater than most member on this board, so it was abotu time i got a compressor.
