On a similar topic, I was just reading an article by & about Shirley Muldowney. She said she knew very little about the cars she raced, at least in comparison to her driving abilities. I guess her 1st husband really got her going in racing, and he was the main mechanic.
Muldowney is s fascinating figure the way she succeeded in a man’s sport. Her bio-pic ‘heart like a wheel’ (or something like that) is a good watch. I think Muldowney is the #1 reason why there are so many successful women drag racers – they are now just racers (or so it seems to this casual observer).
The NASCAR Nation wouldn’t know how to deal with a good woman driver, those backwards ass knuckleheads. Even the open-wheeled snobs don’t know what to make of Danica. Danica has zero on Shirley. If anything, Danica might inadvertently set women drivers back – now $$ grubbing teams will only want ‘hottie’ drivers – skills may be secondary (not that Danica can’t drive, I don’t really know, I’m speaking more about her marketing abilities). Muldowney was given the nickname ‘Cha Cha’, but she hated that, IIRC; she found it degrading.
Not that Diva can’t wrench (I have no idea), this topic just made me remember that article. You racing fans should rent the Muldowney movie.
