In short, the 60s are in a class all their own. 70s and 80s motors are fairly similar but there are some differences.
Think of it this way- the 70s were an experiment in emissions control leading to crappy power. The 80s were an experiment in fuel injection leading to crappy power.
To flat out say the 70s motors sucked is not quite right. Yes, they sucked on paper and in execution but a few small changes can damn near double the HP output of the engine. A new cam, intake, carb, and exhaust system can really wake them up. The same can be said for some of the 80s motors but to a lesser extent.
