the serial number on my gamecube was on a sticker... just heat and release, then swap them. if i get a new console, which is highly unlikely, i will be purchasing the extended warranty. doesn't sound like any of them last worth a damn.
but, to the original post, brian, do you smoke? have a high dust environment? keep your console on the floor? all of these things will tend to murder the console prematurely. just a heads up for your next system.
there really isn't much you can do about a high dust environment except put a filter on the outside of the draw side of the system. if it draws enough air, you don't even have to secure the filter, just slap it up there and the draft will keep it in place. same thing for smokers, as far as filters go. you definitely want to keep the sludge that comes from cigarette smoke out of your console... and they state in the manual that the systems should not be on the floor... carpet fibers, pet hair and extra dust/dander/dirt from the carpet will clog the fan.
