The whole A-Rod thing has nothing to do with Torre being there or not...But Jorge, Mo, and Petitte does...Here is what the Yankees
should do...manager wise- bring in an EXPERIENCED manager such as LaRussa or Bobby Valentine...Giradi is good, but he managed a small market team with a much more forgiving fan base...leave Mattingly on the staff as a hitting/base coach (he won't be a bench coach since the new guy will already have someone he works with)...next, you do everything WITHIN reason to get A-Rod and Posada to stay, A-Rod mainly for his numbers and skill, Posada for the leader/veteran in the clubhouse role...With Mo, you are not too aggressive with him...throw him an offer but don't get too crazy...there WILL be decent closers on the market this year...you do the same thing with Petitte that you did with Rivera, and if you don't resign Petitte, you look for a young, hard-throwing lefty such as Dontrelle Willis...after that you fill some other moderate needs- more middle relief pitching, a fifth(and maybe fourth) starter, and an everyday first baseman (Betemit is OK, but he is better as a middle infielder)...other than that, i can see no reason why the Yanks don't make the playoffs next year...
