savage-would a block of wood between the axle and housing help next time? didn't know...
jersey - i think you are looking at pulling the axle out from what i can decipher. i don't know how the gear comes off but maybe someone can chime in? and while you have it apart, and if it is possible, leave it off. i didn't know 4th gen rears came with traction controlled drum brakes. unless its out of something else...
