I know firsthand that you will piss some cops off if you do that (if not most). I was in my buddy's 2000 Z28 when we got pulled over with a "loud exhaust" in Maryland. We had an electronically calibrated decibel meter in the car which we tried to use to prove our case. That really pissed the guy off and we were hassled for a while as he went over every square inch of the car looking for stuff to write us on. He ended up not finding anything but it was a royal pain in the balls.

Your mileage may vary, of course. But I wouldn't take that chance.

Is it a good idea? I dunno, depends on how much enjoyment you will get out of it.
Your story made me smile. You pulled it out, you proved him that he was abusing his power, he walked around your friends car trying to find something, and nothing happend. So he walked away all upset, shut down, and realized that you made him look like the biggest douche?
And you didnt get a half-chub from that? I would be ALL smiles. Ill take some hassle if all that is gunna happen is him get all bent out of shape, work like a dog trying to find something, and then walk back to his car. Then he has to answer to his/her boss why they pulled someone over and no tickets were given. The cop had to be there for 10-20 mins more then it had to be, which is just eating up time he could be nailing some guy doing 100 in a school zone.
Cops like that give GOOD cops a bad image.
